"Hah. I'm not scared of you. I could take you on even with this poor child's powers. You're nothing but scum. I suggest you stay out of this. You don't want to mess with me."
"Hah. I'm not scared of you. I could take you on even with this poor child's powers. You're nothing but scum. I suggest you stay out of this. You don't want to mess with me."
"We'll see about that," she grinned, anger fluttering in her heart. "I'm not going anywhere until this is a different story."
She'd experienced darkness at work before. She wouldn't let it slide this time.
They let out a laugh. "I don't think so. I've been attached to Kassandra's soul for 18 years. I've been attached to her since she was in the womb. Try and get rid of me and you kill her. And I don't think that's what you're aiming to do."
« I didn’t say I was going to separate you, » Charlotte said softly, her grin slipping into a cold expression. « Just change this narrative. And there’s no point trying to make me leave, because I’m stubborn and I’m not leaving. »
"I'm not trying to make you leave. You know why? Because I'll do it for you." With a wicked grin, they teleported away, leaving only black smoke that disappeared.
Charlotte sighed and took pause, staring at the suddenly empty spot in front of her. After a moment, she held out her hands, palms facing where Kass had been sitting. She shut her eyes and waited a moment, absorbing the print of Kass’s aura— now, at least, she’d know whenever they were near and had a slim bit of information as to where they’d disappeared to.
Crow looked around. "I don't like it here. Let's go somewhere."
"Why, Crow?" Kass asked.
"I told you. I don't like it here." With that, they teleported away again.
Charlotte stayed at the bar, finishing her drink. She figured she could try and follow Kass to where she’d gone, but then the other one would know Charlotte could follow them and be careful from then on.
And yet at the same time, she didn’t what to do. How was she supposed to find them again?
"Why are you acting like this, Crow?"
"Like what? You know for a fact that I am always like this."
"You just seem to be a bit much today."
She downed the last of the drink and got up, setting some money on the table before walking out the door.
It was drizzling outside now, so she turned up her sweater's hood and set off, following wherever her feet would take her.
"Oh, now it's raining."
"I thought you loved the rain Kassandra."
"Well, I do. But I don't really want to be here. And since I don't want to be here I can't enjoy the rain."
"And where would you want to be?"
"Anywhere but here, really."
She crossed streets she'd never seen before, filled with faces that had crossed her path once or twice– Charlotte never did forget a face.
They rain started coming down harder and slowly but surely the streets filtered and emptied, leaving the lone grey figure to wander for some dark force she knew was out there somewhere unknown.
"That's not very helpful, Kassandra."
"Well I don't know where I want to go. Maybe home."
"We are not going home. Why don't we go to another bar?"
"Because I don't like drinking."
"Too bad."
Charlotte ended up sitting alone in a park on the middle of the city. A loose pigeon silently hopped along the wooden edges of the lawn, eyeing Charlotte with its beady black eyes. She stared back, thoughtfully chewing on her bottom lip.
Sick of the rain, she cleared a round area above her of rain and watched as the pigeon fluttered over to her and landed on her knee, happily cooing at the dry patch.
Kass teleported to a bar a few kilometers away from the first one. She walked in and bought a couple beers. She then walked back outside and teleported to the roof. The streets were empty, and Crow felt at home.
She kept still, the wheels in her head churning up and over. She wasn’t sure what had stemmed this… determination to find her. Kass. Of course, she’d recognised the situation in her eyes, and shying away would have felt wrong. But why her? Why this clearly powerful and dangerous spirit?
It was painful, really, this instinct to follow and save. It would have been a thousand times easier to give up.
"Crow?"
"What, Kassandra?"
"Why do you even drink beer?"
"Don't know. I think one of my former vessels was an alcoholic. Guess I liked the taste."
She sat for a short while longer before deciding to head home. She was no use to Kass with pneumonia.
She stood, wrapping her arms around herself and heading the opposite way she'd come down the High Street. The pigeon followed her, then flew off towards the clouds.
"Why do you take over people?"
"Because I don't really have a body. I have all this power and I can't do anything with it if I don't have someone to get it out via."
She walked lone, while people continued to cower away from the rain. She passed cafes and charity shops, markets and brands, and a couple empty bars. Although tempted, she continued on her way until she was home again, wrapped in a blanket on the couch and sitting, thinking.
Crow finished the drink, tossing the bottle to the ground. It shattered on the road, whatever foam was left spilling out. A smirk appeared on Kass's face.
The quiet settled in her mind, giving space for their thoughts to fan out and organise themselves.
She could know when Kassandra was nearby. The alter didn't know that and would probably have dismissed Charlotte. Charlotte had no way to track them unless she'd been near them the last time they teleported.
"Crow, can I ask you something?"
"You ask too many questions, Kassandra. But fine."
"Why me? Of everyone you could have taken as your vessel, why me?"
"You were the perfect one. You would struggle with your powers and you would struggle with your mind. You wouldn't be able to fight back."
She could try and find where they’d gone. Right? She could follow the track Kass had first left when she’d left her bar. They would most probably be gone, but it’d be something, right?
Kass teleported to the ground. She walked inside, buying another drink. This time she slid into a booth, staring at the decor. It was drab and boring, with nothing special about it. Typical.
