“Hm…” she scratched her lip, “Can you get through the back door or window or something?” She tilted her head, “My dad might have some lock picking tools.”
“Hm…” she scratched her lip, “Can you get through the back door or window or something?” She tilted her head, “My dad might have some lock picking tools.”
"How the hell would you explain to your dad that you need lock picking tools?" Grayson laughed softly, leaning back with a sigh.
Jasmine shrugged and laughed, “I guess, but..who knows, maybe he’ll have a soft spot for you after you meet him and he’ll even help us get you into your house.”
"But.." Grayson looked down, fidgeting nervously with the hem of his shirt, "If we…if we talk to your dad then he'll ask about why I couldn't get out of my room in the first place and then they'll probably arrest my dad because of course they would..and I'm stuck here..forever," he finished, staring down at his hands.
“My dad wouldn’t let that happen..you wouldn’t be stuck here.” She stood up from the bed, “You would be safe.”
"No..it's..it's more complicated than that," he said, glancing up at her when she got off the bed.
“What do you mean?” She tilted her head, genuinely interested, “Don’t you want to get out of here for good?”
"Yeah..but uh.." he paused for a second, thinking. "Okay, you know when you look up your name online and it comes up with like..your school and maybe your parents? Well..there are no records of me..anywhere. I don't have a birth certificate. I have no form of identification anywhere. The only proof of me existing is..my..physical myself."
“Oh….oh, wow.” She blinked, “How does that…even happen?” She sat back down on the bed, taken off guard by all of this—But no less ready to help him.
“Careful planning and a lot of secrets,” Grayson muttered, wincing slightly as his hand brushed against the cut on his forehead on the way to push his hair back.
“But…why? Are you illegal or something?” She squinted, more confused than anything, “I mean we don’t have to tell my dad anything.”
“What I have told you is everything I know about myself and my past.” Grayson said, looking up at her hesitantly.
“Okay…wow.” She rubbed her neck with a hand, “That’s strange, but..doesn’t change that I care about you.”
“But I—I don’t get it. I’m not..anyone..” he replied, slightly confused himself.
“Yes you are!” She suddenly snapped, “You’re Grayson. You’re here and talking to me, you have a cat! That’s somebody and someone who deserves friends.”
Grayson’s eyes widened, taken aback by her words. He relaxed a second later, his shoulders slumping. “Thank you Jasmine. I..am..I..don’t really know what to say besides thank you.” He laughed nervously.
“You’re welcome…” she smiled, her expression relaxing too, “Are you ready to go, then?”
“Yeah, sure. Just..don’t mention any of this to your dad please,” he replied, standing up and resting his hand on the wall.
“Of course not.” She grinned, “I’m just excited for you to meet my brother.”
A small part of her hoped that her dad would catch on, even if she didn’t say anything.
"Me too. Let's go." He grinned back and climbed through the window with ease, offering his hand out to her.
She took his hand and climbed out through the window behind him, “Let’s hope they haven’t noticed I’m gone yet,” she chuckled.
Grayson slid down to the shed and hopped to the ground, smiling over at her. “Parents can be oblivious to a lot of things.”
Jasmine followed his lead, “I just hope they’ll be oblivious this time,” She chuckled and began walking towards her house.
“How are you going to explain me though?” He asked, “I mean, before Tuesday, I didn’t come out of my house.”
She shrugged, glancing up to the sky to think. “I’ll just..um…say you needed to work on homework with me or something. We’re study buddies.”
