Aukai squeaked and quickly covered her eyes. She was covered in sand on one side, and flowers bloomed in her hair.
Aukai squeaked and quickly covered her eyes. She was covered in sand on one side, and flowers bloomed in her hair.
Alex fell down, nearly hitting his head on Marco's tank. He pulled his pants up all the way.
"H-How did you get here?!"
Aukai. "I-I don't know!! The only way I would be here is if the shell I gave you fell in water!" She shivered a bit, chilly from being pulled so abruptly from her warm sun. She kept her eyes covered and flowers fell from her head onto Alex's sheets.
Alex, now fully clothed, stood up. Seeing Aukai shiver, he pulled his blanket around her. He picked up one of the flowers. What is she? he thought.
Aukai peeked out when he put the blanket around her. She realized the flowers were there. She waved her hand over them, causing all of them except the one Alex was holding to disappear.
Alex looked from the flower to Aukai.
"Who are you?" He asked in a small voice.
Aukai sighed sadly. "I am many different things…. My name Aukai. I'm protector of the ocean and all aquatic animals. I'm sorry I've disturbed you. I can go back if you didn't intend to call me here."
Alex fall, landing in his desk chair.
"Aukai…" He looked pale, the flower still in his hand.
Aukai's face fell. "I can erase your memories of me if you want me to… You probably don't want to know or have anything to do with me, right?" Her eyes were a sad, watery blue.
"W-what?" Alex said.
"No, nonononono! I- I don't want to forget this."
Aukai's eyes flashed a startled acid green. "W-why…? Most everyone has taken my offer. They always just want to go on with their normal life without me marring it…."
"Marring it? Is that what you think it is?" Alex sat up in his chair, rolling closer to the bed and holding Aukai's hand.
"I think it's the coolest thing ever."
Aukai's eyes filled with tears. "R-really…? B-but I'm n-not supposed to exist…" She sniffled and wiped at her eyes. "Or be alive for that matter…" she whispered to herself.
Alex moved to sit on the bed next to Aukai.
"Don't ever say that. If you weren't supposed to exist, you wouldn't. End of story. You have a reason for being, even if we don't know what."
Aukai shook her head. "I'm to exist until the end of the world, caring for the oceans…. Even if I don't know how to beyond caring for the animals…."
"Well, there you go," Alex said matter-of-factly. He was still holding her hand.
Aukai slumped. "I was a human once too you know…. With a home, a family…." Her fingers threaded through his.
Alex gave her hand a light squeeze.
Aukai started to cry, curling up into herself. "I-I…" She sniffled and set her head on her knees, hiding her face. When she calmed down again, which was quickly, she wiped her eyes and straightened her dress. "Should I leave then?"
"You don't have to if you don't want to, but I'm not gonna keep you here." Alex rubbed his hair. He had forgotten completely about where he had been rushing to.
Aukai shook her head. "You seemed to be in a hurry. I should go…." She slumped when she remembered she was now confined to that tiny patch of ocean now…. Why?
"That doesn't matter right now," Alex stated. It really didn't, not now.
"What's wrong?" He asked when she slumped.
Aukai nibbled on her finger. "I was recently cursed, and now… That beach you dropped me off at? I'm only able to go into the piece of ocean up to the reef. I…. I'm stuck…"
Alex scooted closer to Aukai and put an arm around her.
"I'm sure we can figure out a way to fix this."
Aukai sighed. "It's just… Now I'm stranded from my home. I spent the night on the beach, but I don't think the mortals are going to appreciate it…." She leaned onto Alex. She glanced around and perked up. "You have an eel?" She tilted her head as if listening. "Hello then Marco."
