"I'm the nerdy gay kid whose name reminds everyone of the clownfish. Why would you want to be friends with me?"
"I'm the nerdy gay kid whose name reminds everyone of the clownfish. Why would you want to be friends with me?"
"One, I didn't know you were gay, two, you don't remind me of a clownfish and if you don't want to be friends, we don't have to be friends but it'll be awkward to be stuck with me for the rest of term."
"What? Everyone knows I'm gay. All your friends do. They don't stop tormenting me about it."
Zane frowned, "I didn't know… I'm sorry, if I did I would have put a stop to it ages ago."
Nemo gave a short bout of laughter. "I'm sure you would."
"I'm serious, Nemo. No one deserves to be bullied." He said firmly.
"I guess it would be considered bullying, but I never cared, really. It became normal for me in grade 5, really."
Zane's hands turned into fists, "Well, I'm going to talk to them about it and if it continues you come tell me, okay?"
Nemo looked at him weirdly. "Why would I go to you? I barely know you. I wouldn't even go to my family."
"But I can do something about those idiots and out them in their place," Zane sighed through his nose, "Let. me. help… please."
"Why do you want to help anyway? I'm sure if it was anyone else, you wouldn't do anything. So why me?"
"If you're gonna be this way, I won't help at all if that's what you want. We've done nothing on this project because we've spent most of the time arguing over this!" He sighed, "Just let me doing something for you without you asking questions."
Nemo was silent for a few moments. "Fine," He said eventually. "But don't do anything dumb. I don't want to fail this class."
"I won't. I have one of the smartest kids to help me out so we don't fail." He smiled.
"One of the smartest? I am the smartest," Nemo retorted.
He held his hands up in defense, "Whatever you say pretty boy, I believe you." He didn't notice the small flirt that slipped.
Nemo blushed. Pretty boy? Did he really just call me that? Did he…mean it?
They worked together for the rest of the lesson, it wasn't long since they had been talking for a good majority of it and soon the bell rang for the end of the lesson, "So, I was thinking we could hang out tomorrow after school and actually get some work done? What do you think?"
"What about this afternoon? I don't know how much time we have to do this project."
"Didn't you here Roberts? We have till end of term to complete it and I have football prac tonight so…" He shrugged.
"Sorry. I…didn't know," Nemo said, looking down as he packed up his books.
"No big deal," He smiled, "So I'll pick you up after school tomorrow then?"
"Uh, no. I literally live around the corner. I walk to school. With my brothers."
"Huh… well, I have to drive as I live a while away so… why don't I just pick you all up?"
"I really don't think that's a good idea," Nemo protested.
