“Of course.” I replied quickly, afraid to squeeze her hand in case I scared her off.
“Of course.” I replied quickly, afraid to squeeze her hand in case I scared her off.
"When…." I faltered, biting my lip. "When did you start to fall for me?"
I pulled my lower lip in between my teeth. “Good question.” I murmured softly. “How long have I been mercilessly teasing you for?”
I flushed deeply, suddenly thankful for the cloak of darkness. "Answer my question, and I'll answer yours."
“Sort of need your answer to answer your question.” I smiled sheepishly.
"Oh…" I swallowed hard. "That day when you took me to your bench. And you had a bag of candy. And our hands touched a little while reaching in."
I smiled. “I think that’s when I realized I liked you. Though I think I’ve liked you a lot longer than that.” I chuckled softly, giving her hand a feather light squeeze.
My blush only deepened after that. "Hey, Mercutio? Can I ask you another question?"
“Go ahead.” I breathed, a little nervous as I wondered what else she would want to know about me.
I bit the inside of my cheek, hard. "If–If I wasn't…. the way I was…. what would you want to be doing with me? Not–Not in that way."
“You want an honest answer?” I responded, a bit cryptically, I know.
I clenched my free hand into a fist. I don't know.
"Yes."
“Uh… probably this? Maybe not in your friend’s room. But…” I trailsed off. “I probably would’ve hugged you a lot while I was super drunk. I’m sort of a sad drunk in case you didn’t notice.” I sighed quietly. “I’m sorry about that, getting drunk and making you come get me. I sort of panicked and you seem to magically fix everything.”
My shoulders visibly sank in relief. "I usually don't mind hugs…" I whispered, "Most contact isn't normally a problem for me. But when I'm anxious, everything is… amplified, I guess. And don't apologize… we sorted things out, so I guess it all happened for a reason. Right…?"
“I guess so. Had one hell of a way of working out, but you’re not wrong.” I mused, thinking back the the earlier chaos that I had caused. “I get that you’re anxious, Pazza. You shouldn’t ever feel like you have to explain yourself to me.” I smiled reassuringly.
I scooted ever-so-slightly closer to him. "Thank you….. what are you doing tomorrow? It's Saturday."
“Probably just read or mope around until practice.” I shrugged. “Did you want to go somewhere?”
"It would be nice to…"I admitted softly, "If you want."
“I’d like that.” I replied, quick to reassure her. “Any idea where we can sneak off to?”
"Somewhere we won't be found out…" I exhaled slowly. "Where'd your ideal…." Date. "Outing be?"
“Romeo and I used to hang out in the woods on the Montague side of town. It’s usually empty.” I suggested. “I wouldn’t call it ideal though.”
“What about a picnic?” I suggested, admittedly nervous about heading that far into Montague territory. “In the woods?”
“Are you comfortable doing that? We can also just hang out in your record store.” I offered, not wanting Marina to stress.
“It’s up to you,” I answered quickly, “And besides, that’s sort of a lame d———place to hang out. The record store, I mean.”
“The forest it is then. What should I bring?” I grinned, a bit excited.
