Nathaniel stepped out. "Something is wrong. What's wrong?"
Nathaniel stepped out. "Something is wrong. What's wrong?"
She looked up, only then realising that he was there. "I told you. I had a nightmare."
He stepped closer. "I do not think you realize that blood is not a common symptom of nightmares."
"I don't think you realise that it's a common part of my nightmares." She coughed again, this time with no blood. "It's because of my powers. I can't stop it."
"Oh gosh," he breathed. "I can help." He held his hand up. "Tōht, he whispered.
"That's not going to do anything," Isla sighed. "Trust me. I've gone to so many people with the money I've made at work to fix it, and still nothing happens."
Nathaniel stepped back, shocked. "How?"
"Look, I don't know. I don't know why my powers do it, or why they're so powerful. All I know is that I have them, and whether they're a blessing or a curse remains a mystery."
Nathaniel sat silent, and there was a stillness in the darkness.
Her hand was covered in a scarlet aura, and her eyes glowed a faint scarlet. "I don't know why I have these powers, but I know that I can't get rid of them. And that means I'm stuck with them. Whether I like it or not."
"So there is nothing I can do?"
She shook her head. "No. There's nothing. But you can stay here, with me, and not leave my side." She took his hands in her. "And I know that you'll do that."
He squeezed her hand gently. "Indeed. You can count on it." He looked over his shoulder. "Can you go back to bed? Or would you prefer to stay as you are?"
Isla suddenly compelled to kiss Nathaniel, and so she did. She didn't know how he would react.
He pulled away, shocked. "Isla! I-" He stared at her, the expression on his face a whirlwind of emotion.
She realised what she did, and a look of worry crossed her face. "I'm so sorry, I don't know why I did that."
He breathed heavily, a panicked look on his face. Then it cleared and he kissed her back.
Now it was Isla's turn to be surprised. But, she kissed back. She realised that she'd been craving this for ages, but had never had the opportunity.
They broke away after a while, staring at each other. "I didn't think" Nathaniel began, "I didn't we were more than friends."
"Neither did I," She laughed softly. "Even if I secretly wished it."
"Does this mean sleeping together-" He interrupted himself hurriedly, "In a completely nonsexual way!" He paused. "Does that mean that is changed in any way?"
"Our whole relationship is changed now," Isla replied. "How could it not be? But we haven't changed. Not really."
He took a deep breath. "I want to just fall asleep now. How about we go to bed and talk about it in the morning."
"Yeah, that sounds good," She agreed, following him back to the bedroom. She coughed again, this time with blood, and she hid her slightly bloody hand from him
He sighed quietly to himself, pulled the blankets over the two of them, and in a few minutes fell asleep.
