Indigo approached the library at a light walk, eyes fixed on their destination. The building soon towered over her, the domed roof and perfectly carved pillars easily recognizable. They were surprised that such a place would let someone like her work there, but Indigo counted herself lucky. Working in a library was, truly, the best thing they could have asked for.
They walked up the marble steps and made their way inside, the shelves of books and scrolls soon becoming visible. Technically, she didn’t have to go through here, but she liked looking around. While this was a public library, available to common people, there was an area that acted as a kind of research center, where researchers, scholars, academics, and other such people worked— or lived. This area had its own entrances, but Indigo had time to look around. She picked up a book or two and skimmed through it before reluctantly putting it down. They already had borrowed enough material. Soon, she took a side hallway, and the place around her transformed. Instead of shelves and ladders and small places to sit, there were wide areas of desks and stacks of literature all over the place, Fae murmuring to each other quietly. Indigo felt something akin to deja vu as she slipped by, largely unnoticed.
The scholar that had approved her hiring had a table all to themself, and they stood beside it, various books open and papers scattered about, a pen tucked behind their ear and ink staining their fingers. They were tall and willowy, with long, silver hair that draped to the small of their back. They were not young, but didn't look old. Fae didn't age the way Humans did, and this scholar was no exception to that rule. They looked up when Indigo approached, cocking their head faintly. "You must be my new assistant." they greeted, setting down a paper they had been frowning over. They were dressed simply, in a plain shirt and pants, with a coat over top. "Ilathair Arocus." they introduced themself, still studying Indigo as if they were a puzzle. "Not to be offensive, but, you do now how to read, yes?" they asked, hands clasping together at their waist. "You will be far less useful if you cannot."
Indigo nodded to the tall Fae, studying them briefly. They were somewhere between excited and nervous, which was probably normal, but she told herself not to build too many expectations. Remember, there is more to this life than work. There is more to this job than endless tasks without pay.
“Kai Pendall,” she said, introducing themself in turn. She just laughed quietly. “I can read and write, Mx. Arocus. I plan to make myself useful, do not worry.”
Ilathair nodded. "Good." they replied. "Now, when you applied, remind me, what you said your specific areas of knowledge are? It would be helpful to know your background knowledge." they turned ot their papers, shuffling through a few of them and sorting them into various piles on the table.
Indigo counted on her fingers. "Medicine, herbology, alchemy, and textiles," they said. "Other knowledge I may have is more miscellaneous." Due to their love of all things to do with books, they were rather knowledgable about literature and history, though it was to a lesser extent.
Ilathair hummed for a moment. "Oh, perfect." they responded. "Good." they paused for a moment, thinking. "And can you copy? Information, I mean. Word for word, from a text, without leaving anything out or changing any information?" they squinted for a moment, tucking a long strand of hair back out of their face.
She ran a hand through her hair. “I suppose it sounds easy enough. Though, it does sound like the sort of thing I could make mistakes on if I am not at my best.”
They squinted at her thoughtfully. "Is that a yes, or is that a no? It cannot be a maybe. I cannot trust you with copying texts if you are not sure that you will not make a mistake."
The anxiety shot through them like a spear. Indigo coughed once. "It is a yes. Just thought I should be honest." They managed to keep her voice and expression neutral, though her body stiffened a little.
They nodded, shuffling through some of their manuscripts. "And if I send you to search for a specific text, you will be able to find it? Or, if the library does not have it, speak to a librarian about getting it?" they asked, fingers flickering over various texts and books in front of them.
“Absolutely,” she nodded. She had plenty of experience navigating and looking for things in libraries.
(Djdkjdsjkds)
(hello~)
(unsure what to have Ilathair say lmao)
They nodded. "Well. Good." they paused for a long moment, eyes narrowing in consideration. "I have paperwork I am supposed to give you, yes?" they questioned, fingers twitching as they thought about what they needed to do.
(So much nodding-)
Indigo waited. “Um, yes, I believe so.” Putting a hand to their mouth, they mumbled, “Contact information. And a calendar too, I believe?” She tried to take a breath and keep themself from zoning out or something.
(bobblehead time)
They nodded, and shuffled through their papers yet again, finally pulling out a few different sheets, setting them before Indigo. "There." they said. "These should be everything that you needed from me. Now, if you would just fill them out, then that would be perfect."
(Lol)
They accepted the papers and looked through them. Raising their head, they fiddled with the collar of her tunic. “Um, pen please?”
(just two bobbleheads bobbling at each other)
"Ah! Right, my apologies." Ilathair fumbled for a moment, searching the clutter again, and then held out a pen to Indigo. "There you are." their fingers twitched momentarily, eyes narrowing in thoguht. "I have not had an assistant in a while, you will have to forgive me if I am a touch unsure what to do with you." they watched Indigo for another long moment, before seeming to realize that perhaps starnig would make them nervous, and they turned back to their papers again.
(Yes)
Indigo’s lips formed a line. “Mmm. I understand.” Honestly, they weren’t sure how to feel about that. She took the pen and studied each of the documents again, filled them out accordingly and slid them back to Ilathair. “Ah, you need to review them, right?”
(i actually have no idea what to haev Ilithair do with them ;-; sorry gjbkfjbhkj)
They nodded, taking the documents and scanning through them. "Yes, I do." they carefully read through the documents, then set them aside again. "These all seem to be alright, so we should be good to move on from it." they rubbed their hands together for a moment, then tucked a lock of silver hair behind their ear again, a quick, absent motion born more of habit than an actual need to do so.
(I’ll just post a little timeskip blurb)
(okay!)
(Wow I’m so bad at writing transitions apparently)
(fdkghsbkjdfgb you're good! Do you need help or?)
(I think it’s just the ‘getting started’ part)
(hmm where did we wanna skip to?)
