Benjamin nodded in agreement. “T’would. Then we’d finally be free. And we could experience what it’s like to travel the world.” He smiled, caught up in the thought now.
Benjamin nodded in agreement. “T’would. Then we’d finally be free. And we could experience what it’s like to travel the world.” He smiled, caught up in the thought now.
"I'm sure your skill with melodrama can carry us through. What shall our tragic backstory be? Two orphans, best friends as could be who want to see the world! I'm good with tying ropes, I could do well on a ship! If I don't get sick from the sea or the miasma first." he smiled, jumping up off the bed with a manic energy. "We could become heroes!" he shouted, anger bubbling at the edges of his words. "We'd be great, better than! And that's the truth."
Benjamin smiled, but gave the other man a quiet shhh. “My parents are asleep,” he explained. “I do like the two orphans thing though. Hmm, we could always be like one of those cool explorer guys! We could bring sketchbooks and draw pictures of strange wildlife; find a group of explorers to go with! Or we could try our hand at painting or horseback riding or really anything that we want!”
"I already know how to paint and ride on horseback, but I see your point." he said, calming himself. "We can do anything we want. And really, who would stop us? Nobody. We're perfectly capable of getting rid of obstacles, either way."
Benjamin grinned. “Indeed we are!” he added, enthusiastic. “We could just go from one adventure to the next like it’s nothing, and maybe one day we can write a book about all of the fun that we had.” He paused for a moment, a dreamy smile on his face realization melted it away slowly. “But what are we going to tell our families?”
"Nothing. Trust me, we'll be better off for it." he scowled. "The problem is them, to put it simply. And I'm putting it very simply. But I have a list of reasons, if it helps."
Benjamin frowned, knowing that as far as they were concerned, their families didn’t deserve to know. However, something inside of him wanted to at least try to make nice with them despite the hurt they had inflicted. Maybe the wedding was enough for that, but some part of him still felt guilty for leaving them behind.
“What’s your list?” he asked, trying to sound largely unconcerned. He wondered if Judas knew that he still cared about his family in spite of everything.
"For one, everything I am they'd immediately shun. For two, we're rich and comfortable and they're boring old bags who want us to waste our lives away on parties and plays and they'd hate us having actual fun." he groaned, flopping back on the bed dramatically.
Benjamin bit his lip, still a bit guilty. “You’re right,” he responded. “I know you’re right.” But he still cared about them, even if they only cared about the versions of himself and Judas that they wanted them to be.
"Look, it's fine if you care about them, they're family. But… well, I've for more than enough reasons to want to distance myself from my family and yours, and we'll just have to agree to disagree." Judas was able to pick up that, at least. He knew how much Bejamin cared, but unfortunately he just didn't see eye to eye with his friend.
Benjamin nodded, pressing his lips together. “It’s you or them, and you’re more like family than they’ll ever be,” he admitted softly. “And it’s going to hurt, but at least we’ll be together.” He ran his hands up and down his arms before looking up at Judas again with a small smile.
"Oh, I love you, honestly. You're the best friend I've ever had." he grinned, tilting his head to look over at Benjamin, almost sweetly. Almost, there was a layer of playfulness and sarcasm underneath and a smug energy he always carried.
Benjamin’s heart skipped a beat at the words, but he knew what Judas really meant. Luckily, he was able to muster up a playful smile as well. He’d always choose Judas, and he’d known it ever since they were kids. But now the words took on a whole new light.
Best not to think about that, he reminded himself. “And you’re the best friend I’ve ever had,” he added.
(I am actively romance baiting because like. I mean I do hope they end up together but for now I want a struggle and also y e a r n i n g)
Judas sat up, ran towards the window. "Shit, it's been too long. The maid will wonder where I am, and I have to get fitted for the wedding dress-ugh. I'll be seeing you!" he jumped out the window, sprinting back across the grass just as the world was waking up.
(lol slow burn romance is my jam)
Benjamin watched him go with a fond smile, resting his chin in his hand until Judas was out of sight. Then he returned to his bed and flopped down with a sigh. Surely his parents would let him rest for a few more minutes.
(I'm going to bed now but I'll respond in the morning!)
(okie doke!)
Judas arrived just in time for the maid to come in, diving underneath the covers and pretending to sleep. "Miss, you ain't fooling me what with the grass stains on the covers. Where've you been, that boy again? Oh, he's lovely he is, if I was younger I'd marry him myself I would! Now get up!" the pale old woman rambled on, fixing up Judas's hair with a comb and a few hundred pins. The dress he wore was horrible, he felt worse and worse inside it every second, but it couldn't be helped. Good things came to those who waited, and Judas was very good at waiting. "Alright, alright! You've done the corset tight enough!" he wheezed to the maid, who shook her head and babbled on. He had nothing against the woman, but she was quite mouthy. And he was struggling to breathe, in this outfit, boiling hot and rib crushingly tight as it was.
Things were much more relaxed for Benjamin, those father himself made an appearance briefly to inform him the day’s proceedings before disappearing somewhere into the house. He ate his usual breakfast in his room and then went to go and pick up his wedding attire, the fitting for which had been much less intrusive.
Judas descended the stairs once dressed, giving the staff a wave before meeting with his parents in the sitting room. He drowned out their speech for the most part, but then they said, "You're going to visit the Kaylocks with us today, to see that lovely boy Benjamin. You must miss him, really." Mother said, smiling sympathetically. "Really? The wedding is tomorrow, shouldn't we meet then?" Judas wondered, but after some circle talk they finally got out the door.
Judas didn't want to see Benjamin, not like this. Not… not the way he was. Not in this horrible dress, anyways. But they set off, against Judas's will.
As soon as Benjamin walked back in the door, box with his suit in hand, he was met by his mother. He blinked, wondering what it is today.
“I was waiting for you to get back,” she huffed, studying him down her nose. “Why do you insist on doing errands that a servant could do just as well?”
“I—“
“No matter,” she said, cutting him off before I could get a word in edgewise. “Your bride to be is arriving soon and you simply cannot meet her like that. Go change at once.”
“I—“
“I said go change,” she commanded, steely-eyed. Benjamin straightened his mouth into a thin line and nodded, walking down the hall to his room.
When they arrived, the servants showed them in immediately and Judas took the opportunity to sit down and lounge back on the cushions, unladylike as he could possibly be. His parents glared but said nothing, and so they waited together in awkward silence for Benjamin and his family to arrive.
Not too much later, Benjamin’s parents showed up with Benjamin trailing behind them awkwardly. They sat down, and Benjamin’s gaze flickered to Judas as his parents began making small talk about the wedding and how lovely the whole affair would be. Benjamin felt awful for his best friend, seeing him so obviously uncomfortable. He gave Judas a small smile, hoping that he would see at as the reassurance Benjamin meant it to be.
"Hello, sweetie." Judas said with a bitterness that could rot a barrel of apples to the core. "How is my lovely husband to be doing on this fine morning." he hissed, glaring at basically everyone but Benjamin. He did care about the man after all, and didn't want to hurt him with his words. Not too much, anyways, he was still quite pissed after all.
Benjamin winced slightly, but the look on his parents’ faces as they tried not to frown disapprovingly was a bit funny. “I am doing fine, and yourself?” He made sure never to address Judas as a girl no matter the situation. He couldn’t imagine how much his friend must hate it.
