"Oh… thank you," Eve acknowledged politely. Not wanting to disrupt the girl reading, she collected her books and left.
Isabela started to cry again since her book was getting sad so she decided to stop reading for now. She got up from behind the front desk and took the books out of the return bin and put them in a small cart. She wheeled the cart through the selves and put the books away.
Eve returned hours later, around 8:30, wearing the same elegant clothes from earlier with a white doctor's coat overtop. The front of it was covered in blood, but she had completely forgotten to take it off before she left. She wasn't exactly sure what she was doing, she just knew that this was one of the few places in the world she was able to truly relax. She tugged the door, but it was locked, as she expected. The library was closed after all. But the lights were on inside, so the girl must still be here. She rapped on the glass part of the door, shifting her weight from one foot to the other as she waited.
Isabela heard someone trying to open the doors at this hour? She was almost done with her book. She decided she should go tell them the library is closed she walked up to the door and saw the girl from earlier wearing a white coat covered in blood. oh no is she a murderer!? she thought to herself. She unlocked the door. "Umm hey you can up come inside if you want. It is getting colder out." She. Said holding the door open. oh god I'm letting a murderer inside aren't I? she thought to herself.
"Thank you," Eve said, hurrying in and bringing the scent of the cold with her. She noticed Isabela staring at her clothes, and she looked down with confusion to see the blood on her coat. "Oh my God!" she cried. "I'm so sorry! I completely forgot to take this off." She placed her book she'd brought on the counter and slipped her arms out of the jacket's sleeves. "I'm a doctor, I work in trauma," she explained hurriedly so the girl didn't think she was a crazy psycho.
oh thank god Isabela thought "oh no it's fine." She replied "if you don't mind me asking what books are you reading? I've been looking for some new books to read." Sha asked
Eve smiled, folding her coat expertly with the blood on the inside so it didn't stain anything. God forbid! "No, I don't mind!" She reached out and picked up the book she'd put on the counter so she could hand it to Isabela. "It's a trilogy. I'm on the second book now – Linger. It's very good."
"Ooh I am almost finished with the 5th book of this series but the author is still writing the 6th it should come out in a few years since he is taking a break so I need something to read. I will definitely check it out." Isabela ranted.
Eve couldn't help but admire the girl as she ranted. "What series is that?" she asked curiously. "With my schedule I'm not sure I'd have time to read a going-on-six book series, but I'll try to give it a whirl."
"Oh it's pretty good. It is called Harry Potter. She answered with a smile. "It is set in a world full of magic and witches and wizards good and evil it is truly amazing."
(Let's pretend Harry Potter is on book six in 2022 but with no COVID)
(Okay haha)
"Mmm," Eve hummed. "I believe I've heard of it becoming popular. I'll have to read it because of you now." She grinned and went to place her coat by the door.
"You can stay here with me until I leave at 9. I normally stay til o instead of 7 when the library closes to avoid my annoying roommate. She works the night shift somewhere so if I get home at 9 I don't have to talk to her." She continued. "I only really live with her to pay rent."
"Mmm, I used to have an annoying roommate in med school," Eve remarked. She placed her coat down and headed back over to where Isabela sat. "She was jealous I did better in classes than her. Guess which one of us became a doctor." She arched her eyebrows and lifted her chin up proudly.
Isabela giggled "well my roommate watches cheesy tv shows to loud." She said as the moonlight came in through the window and lit up her bright blue eyes letting them sparkle in the moonlight.
Eve's heart rate spiked for a moment, seeing Isabela's eyes light up. Her own dark eyes didn't have that ability in the moonlight, but when the setting sun hit them… they glowed like a warm fire. "Really?" she asked with a laugh. "Who's your roommate?"
"Ahh she works as a night guard for the museum. It is not as cool as it sounds trust me" she replied.
Eve chuckled. "Working a night shift at All Saints is no walk in the park either," she remarked. "Especially not when it's the same shift as Coop or Carrie. Or Mike. Or any of the other doctors, really. They're all insufferable."
"Oh yea but you guy's are saving lives. So thanks I guess." Isabela said with a smile.
Eve dipped her head slightly. "You're welcome I guess," she replied, looking up at Isabela with a smile.
"Well I don't think I have seen you here before. Do you come here often?" Isabela asked curiously.
"I do. I did," Eve corrected herself sadly. "The shifts have been picking up more recently. Even on my day off, my administrator called me in. Can't even enjoy a full 24 hours anymore."
"Well I have been working here for 2 years now and I have never seen you so I am glad you are back now. You can come anytime before 9 pm and any time after 6 am those are the times I come in to avoid my roommate." She ranted again. Isabela hoped to see more of this girl. She was very kind.
Eve nodded. "Will do. Hopefully my hours loosen up this week. This place is my home away from home. I've missed it."
"Well feel free to ask me anything or just browse or read." Isabela suggested before sitting on a window sill in the back of the library.
Eve nodded. "Alright then." She made her way back over to the spot she'd been sitting in earlier. Making herself comfortable, her face softened as she began to read.
