Eve sat alone in the corner of the bookstore. Two books were stacked on either side of her, and a fifth book sat in her lap, the one she was currently reading. Her glasses propped on her nose and her dark hair fell around her face to frame her features. It was her day off of work, the first in a while, and she was spending it in solitude. Well, solitude with book characters.
A relatively short young woman about her early 20's walks in wearing a light pink dress with white polka dots on it she came inside and sat at the front desk of the library. She opened a book on her desk and started reading. Smiling while doing so, with her freckles across her face a fluffy brown hair running down to her elbows. She had a name tag on that read Isabela
Eve was entirely zoned into her book, she didn't notice the arrival of the girl. She sighed softly as the plot continued to unfold, speeding towards its climax where the couple finally confessed their love for each other.
As Isabela read her book she let out a small squeal of joy as an army riding dragons had to fight and army of chithulu's. It turned out her squeal was a bit louder than she thought and she quickly covered her mouth to try and hide it.
Eve jerked her head up when she heard someone squeal. Her instincts told her it was someone in trouble, but when she looked, she only saw an attractive looking woman, about her age – maybe a few years younger – reading a book and covering her mouth.
Isabela noticed a woman with a stack of books on either side of her look up at her. She smiled awkwardly at her and waved while mouthing "sorry"
Eve chuckled and waved back before turning to her book again. She only got a few more sentences in before her phone buzzed in her pocket. Without looking, she knew what it was. Her eyes closed. "You're shitting me," she whispered and slipped the device out to read the screen.
Isabela kept reading when suddenly her favorite character died. She started tearing up as she continued reading. She eventually lets some tears roll down her face as her favorite character's lover screamed into the sky asking the gods why they would do this to him.
Eve stood up, gathering her books in her arms, and headed to the desk. She was about to set them down to check-out, and that's when she noticed the girl behind the counter crying. "Oh! Oh my God, I-I'm so sorry!" she stammered. "Are you alright?"
Isabela looked up teary eyed "yea It j-just that" she stammered "my favorite c-character just died." She wiped the tears away from her face. "Anywho what how can I help you?" She asked still choked up a bit.
Eve offered a small, genuine smile. "I know the feeling. I'm sorry to bother you, but could I get these?" she asked, lifting her little stack onto the counter.
"Of course" she exclaimed with a smile she checked out the books and handed them back to her. "Have a great day!"
Eve smiled. "Thanks!" Just as she reached to take them, her phone rang, and she jumped. "Sorry, could I just leave these here for a moment?" she asked. "I really need to take this."
"Of course." Isabela responded before she continued to read her book and got lost in another world.
"Thank you," Eve replied, hitting the answer button on her phone.
"Where are you?" a feminine voice asked on the other end.
"At the library," Eve answered quietly. "Do you need me to come in that badly?"
"Yes. Only Coop is here, and we're drowning in patients."
Eve sighed tiredly. "Today was supposed to be my day off."
Isabela looked up "well your welcome here anytime. The library closes at 7 but I'm here until 9 you can come anytime." She whispered at the woman.
Eve glanced over as the girl behind the counter spoke to her, but her words were drowned out by Gloria's response over the phone. "Listen, Eve, I'm sorry. But Carrie called out sick today, and I can't get a hold of Mike. Please."
Reluctantly, Eve let her shoulders drop. "Is Jackie working?"
"She is," Gloria responded quickly with a hopeful tone to her voice. "I have Jackie, Zoey, Sam, and Kelly currently on the floor."
"That's practically all our main nurses," Eve replied incredulously. "Alright, I'll come in. But only because of Jackie."
"Great! As soon as possible, Dr. Springett." With that the line went dead.
Eve lowered the phone and sighed. She turned to the girl behind the desk, reading the name on her tag. "Sorry, Isabela. I couldn't hear you. What did you say?"
"Your welcome to come anytime I'm always here hours after the library closes." She repeated and handed her her books then went back to reading.
