"Max, Anna," Janet started, her voice becoming more serious. "You two are going to go to school today. Even though you've probably missed half of your classes, at least you won't be missing the other half."

Max groaned softly. Looking at his watch, he saw that it was only 12:48pm, and sighed. He estimated that they were in fifth period now, and he knew that sixth period started at 2:14, so it was pointless to hope that fifth period would be over before they got home. He wasn't wrong about it being fifth period, though he wasn't correct either. It had actually been fourth period, though by the time they arrived at home, it was five minutes into fifth period.

Chiasa stepped out of the car, stretching. She had been in the car for longer than her body would've liked, but there was nothing she could do about it.

"Chiasa, we live about a ten minute's walk from Woodland High, so I'll be sending Max and Anna to school in a bit, and if you want to join them at school today, just let me know," Janet told Chiasa in a kind voice. The school had told her that Chiasa didn't have to go to school the day she arrived, since they knew she would be enter America pretty late and would most likely be very jet-lagged.

Chiasa gave Janet a sweet smile. "Oh, I'd love to join them, but as you might expect I'm very… what's the word, sorry I need to look it up," she pulled out her phone, using the translation software she'd downloaded the night before the flight in case of situations like these. "Um, I think it's… jet… lagged, yeah that's it."

New gossip? Essie's phone was blowing up with notifications from varying apps and text messages, everyone excited over the new exchange student, it would seem. Who she was, who's friend's brother's cousin's acquaintance had seen a glimpse of her at the airport, somewhere, wherever. Half of it was bullshit, but news, and gossip, traveled like wildfire here. 'She's tall, blonde, and looks like a model!' 'She's illegal, here on the run from intelligence operatives in her country!' So many lies. The truth would all come out when she got to school, obviously.

And Essie found herself kind of curious. They didn't get a lot of new students, so she could see why she herself had been such a big deal. And a girl from another country, as opposed to a different state, was a big deal. She mulled that over while she ate small scoops of her icecream at a time. I'll probably run into her at some point. Let's hope she can handle the assholes at an American public school.

But the one thing that was nagging at the edge of her consciousness was that she really wanted to check out the school before her first official day. Chiasa heaved a big sigh. "On second thought, I would like to get a feel for the school before I officially start tomorrow… is it too late to change my mind?"

"Are you sure? There's no pressure or anything, it's your choice," Janet said kindly, going over to the fridge in the kitchen, pulling out some homemade sushi. "Also, I tried to make sushi… I hope you like it," she gave a half-smile at the lopsided shapes of the sushi.

"Yes, I would like to go, if that's okay with you?" Chiasa smiled back at Janet. "The sushi looks great, thank you! May I…?" she asked, going to sit down at the kitchen counter opposite of Janet.

"Yeah, of course!" Janet took a sushi, taking a small bite. "Max, Anna," she called to her kids. "Chiasa is going to be joining you guys when you leave, okay?"

Anna entered the kitchen, trying to put her hair up in a ponytail. "That's great! I'm so glad you decided to join us Chiasa!"

"Do you want some help Anna?" Chiasa asked cautiously, still not knowing all of their personalities, so she was a bit more cautious than usual.

When her phone buzzed again, after the initial flurry from all her friends and people who knew her had died down, Essie knew it could only be one person.

"Dad. Whatcha need?" She greeted, brushing her blonde hair back from her face as she scooted the half full icecream bowl away from herself, unable to continue. It was a miracle she had eaten that much of it, honestly.

"Your meeting is done, right? You should be at school, kiddo." Her father ignored her sigh, and the clacking of the keys on a keyboard carried over the receiver to her. Can't even spare five minutes for a phone call. Typical. "Attendance is part of the agreement, and your grounding."

"Yeah, yeah. Fine. I'll start heading over, then. You know there's only a few more blocks left, right? I could just wait for the community service after, it's out of after school detention for us troublemakers." Not that her father cared. Even if there was only half of one by the time she got there, he'd want her there. ' A De Vos never skips.' A De Vos never got arrested, either, and yet here she was. Royal fuckup. Whatever.

Anna looked up, a small smile on her face. "Yeah, sure, that would be great! Thank you!" she walked over to Chiasa, handing her the hairband she had around her wrist earlier.

Chiasa gave Anna another smile back, a smaller, cautious smile. She took the hairband, carefully wrapping it around Anna's short hair. "There isn't much hair to put up," she couldn't help commenting. She was in a different country, so this might be an acceptable thing to say, right?

Anna laughed softly. "Yeah, I know right? I honestly don't know why I like having it up. It's just this weird thing that followed me even after I got my hair cut."

~small timeskip after all the small talk and whatnot~

"Mom, can we go now?" Max asked, walking into the kitchen. He had forgotten that it was still fifth period, the one he hated. But it'd been so long since they got home, and he couldn't wait to tell his friends in person about Chiasa. After all, it hadn't been too long ago that Max's phone had blown up with notifications, mostly from friends, and other people he didn't know. Mostly, though they were all asking the same question: "What's the new exchange student like?" He didn't answer most of them, but he told his friends that he'd tell them when he got to school.

"Oh! Sorry for keeping you, best get going now!" Janet's face brightened, seeing Max "excited" for school. Of course, he wasn't excited for school, but that's how she interpreted the question.

Anna took Chiasa's hand, bouncing out the door. "Come on, slowpoke!" she called back to Max, letting her hand slip out of Chiasa's as she broke into a sprint, letting the light breeze pull her hair back behind her.

Chiasa looked around, not sure what she should do, but seeing as Max had just ran out of the door, she too started running.

@croccin-champagne

((sorry! the amount of text was daunting so i put it off until i had a computer, and then it got buried..))

Essie took her time getting back to the school. Technically, it should have taken her five, maybe fifteen minutes, at a decent pace, to walk there. But she was avoiding that as much as she could. So instead, she took every excuse she could get.
Stopping to buy a cute shirt she knew she would never actually wear? Perfect. Petting four different dogs, and crossing the street to pet one of them? Absolutely. She even stopped for coffee, just to take her time. And by the time she actually made it to school, she was late for fifth period, an iced coffee in hand and perfectly okay with that. Why wouldn't she be?

"Ms. De Vos, happy to finally have you in class." The teacher, a younger guy with thick rimmed glasses and permanently messy hair greeted as she stepped in the door, a grin on his face. Mr. Turner was one of her favorite teachers, even if he taught her least favorite subject. ELA. Making her way towards her seat in the back of the room, she noticed someone already sitting there, forced to take the spot next to it as she responded.
"Happy? To see me? Well gee, Eric, I didn't know you cared. So, what horrid lesson are we learning today?"
"We're reading, which you might know if you didn't sleep in class. Let's hope that coffee keeps you up this time, huh? Now, as I was saying-" He continued talking after his banter with Essie, this time to the rest of the class.

@saor_illust school

(Super sorry! I thought I had replied, but I guess not)
The trio, which consisted of Max, Chiasa, and Anna walked into the one class that they knew they had together, after picking up Chiasa's schedule from the office. "You're going to like the teacher," Anna informed Chiasa. "He's very straightforward with his lessons."
(Also, sorry for the short response but I have to go in four minutes and won't have time to finish. I'll try to finish it tonight)

@croccin-champagne

((It’s fine! You know, we don’t have to do super long responses all the time lmao))

True to form, Essie was dozing. Mr. Turner never told her off for it, as long as she got some semblance of work turned in. She didn’t have the best grade in the class, no, but she was coasting by. With everything recently, nobody could really blame her. Or they could, but for different reasons. What you did wasn’t exactly something everyone loved.

@saor_illust school

(Lol okii)
Chiasa opened the door, shyly walking in. Anna and Max followed not long after. "Mr. Turner, sir, this is the new exchange student, Chiasa," Anna explained. "Come sit with me 'n Max," she added in a whisper, turning to Chiasa.

@croccin-champagne

The entire class's focus was on the new girl standing up front, with the exception of Essie. Who was still dozing, next to an empty seat. The murmurs and curious stares made it obvious none of them had I'll intent, at least not yet. That, as anyone from the school new, could flip flop wildly.

"Yes, yes, the new exchange student." Mr. Turner said, eyes sparkling with mirth as he held out his hand to shake. "Call me Mr. Turner, or just Turner. Either one works. Welcome to Wiada East Highschool, I hope your stay isn't horrible. If any of these kids bother you, come to me. Or Ms. De Vos over there, who is once again sleeping in class."

"Signing me up for more volunteer work? Last I checked, body guarding didnt fit the volunteer criteria. More a paid job." Essie called, voice muffled by her arms.

@saor_illust school

"I- uh- yes, thank you for the kind offer," Chiasa smiled shyly, taking Mr. Turner's hand. "But it's okay, really. I'll be fine."

"Shush," Anna started. "We want to leave a good impression on you, don't we?" she asked, mainly addressing the question to the rest of the class.

@croccin-champagne

((sorry! been kinda blah lately, but weekend means i'll be on a bit))

The downturned looks and muttered agreements seemed semi reluctant, but Anna was well known enough as someone who could ruin your life with a well placed rumor. And she was obviously willing to get revenge if anyone tried anything.

"As good an impression as we can." Mr. Turner joked, motioning to the seat beside Essie. "Our resident slacker won't be much help with catching up, and she's a bad influence, but she won't bother you either. Go ahead and take the seat beside her."

@saor_illust school

(that's okay)

"Oh- thank you," Chiasa wandered over to the seat next to Essie and gave a nervous smile. "H-hello…" she managed to get out, taking a seat.

"You'll do just fine Chiasa!" Anna mouthed to her, as she headed over to her own assigned seat, next to Max, coincidentally.

@croccin-champagne

"Howdy." Essie greeted, lifting her hand in a lazy wave as her head stayed resting on her arm. She shifted though, opening one green and blue eye to survey the girl next to her. Strange eyes. Strange, but weirdly captivating, they'd been called before. "Name's Essie."

@saor_illust school

(Asdfgdesfd sorry I swear I thought I replied!!!)
"H-hi…" Chiasa smiled shyly, bringing a hand up to chew on her fingernails. Gosh darn it, you know that's your worst habit! she told herself, but she didn't stop. She was nervous, and that's what she did when she was nervous. It didn't make her any less nervous, but it helped to focus on something else.
