(that would make sense! escalation to more extreme/harsh punishments takes a while to occur—people’s defenses/moral protests would have to be softened over time. so the coup could’ve happened a while ago, and the group could have to flee initially because of how severe the cruelty is becoming)

okie dokie, I think maybe I’ve come up with a slightly fuller description of the plot we were considering!
let’s say there was a kingdom in one country—the main country, which is currently unnamed lol—and that it was neutral territory between two bigger warring countries. the more religious/anti magic country, using the advantages of surprise and force, could have decided to overcome the kingdom in attempt to gain ground against the other magic supporting country. this could’ve happened when Lumi was anywhere from 2-5 (based on what his current age is!) which would explain why he doesn’t remember the coup/their lineage.
years after the murder of (most of) the royal family, the new ruling body catches rumor of a supposed heir (Lumi). if this heir claimed the right to the throne, then they could undo all of the anti magic protocols/programs/punishments in place and maybe even choose to side with the magic country. the leaders send out a party to find and kill the heir in secret.
due to their semi magical appearance, maybe Lumi could’ve already chosen to flee the country with a group of a few others (including Dyonisia’s character, maybe)? and then they end up getting ambushed by the search party along the way. once they somehow escape, they maybe could get picked up by a certain traveling circus (Zelra + friends). and then they would all be together! except for Ice’s character, who would be continuing to come after them even after the demise of the rest of the search party
and then romance/angst ensues!!

yes exactly like that!
that would work! if your character had never really been outside of the kingdom—or if they had gotten hurt in the clash between their search party and Lumi/the others—then it would make sense that they’d have to rely on the circus for help, even if they didn’t want to. either would give them an excuse for joining the group at first, and they could rationalize it by saying that they’re waiting to isolate Lumi somehow to take them out.
or you could also have their magic exposed in the battle with the search party and then have some of the members of it survive? which would mean that your character couldn’t go back to the kingdom out of shame/fear of punishment. so they’d pretend to join the party because they’re like them, but in reality they’re trying to redeem themselves by killing Lumi.

Appearance: (images are fine, but also include description) Dark brown skin with pink curly hair up to their cheek (it looks like cotton candy), 5'5, and lean and athletic, though not muscular. They have hazel eyes, a wide nose and plump lips. He has cloud shaped tattoos on his cheeks.
Usual Outfit/Clothing Style: He likes dressing in pastel colors. He likes wearing soft clothes, like sweaters and coats, though they occasionally enjoy wearing showy outfits, like short shorts and crop tops.
Personality: Eccentric and sweet, they are very open and kind to people, though they often forget personal space and boundaries. They are also extremely oblivious to their surroundings, which makes it sort of hard to distinguish enemy from friend and friend from crush. Though unseemingly at first, they have a very strict schedule and are very responsible with it.

Powers: His hair can grow in volume and length to trap things in it, whether it be people or things. It makes shoplifting very easy. It also has a strangely sweet aroma, like cotton candy.
Brief Backstory: Raised by loving parents in the kingdom, and was part of a lineage of royal guards. His dad died when the conspirators attacked the royal family, and he and his mom were left devastated, having to move out and live among the impoverished. Though he was encouraged not to use his magic, he did anyways in secret. There he was raised to be a protector more than anything else, and he did, though they committed a few crimes along the way (mainly shoplifting)
Other: He hates when people wake him up early. He likes physical touch and snow.

Ty has grey hair and lines beneath his eyes; both contribute to making him seem older than he is. He is quite young, but due to both his temperament and the premature greying of his hair, he often seems older than he is. He also has a bit of an RBF, and seems very unfriendly (because he is) at first glance. He has scars over his right eye, though he can see out of it just fine. His eyes are green. Ty is rather tall, standing at 6'1", with broad shoulders and a toned form. Long, jagged scars down his back, on either side of his spine.
Usual Outfit/Clothing Style: Button-ups and dark slacks, typically. Things he can move in easily. (idk i'm bad at these)
Personality: Ty is quiet and solemn, much of the time, and doesn't smile often. He takes a while to speak, preferring to think over what he is going to say before the words leave his mouth. Can be melancholic, too, and very often taciturn. Despite all of this, he is very soft and gentle with anyone he cares about/lets down his walls for, but those people are rare and few. Does not allow hugs (but he fucking needs them). Hates magic and magic users/beings/people, including himself.

Brief Backstory: Tychus was born with wings. When their country was taken over, he was very young, but old enough to form memories. One of his earliest memories is of his parents having to pin him down and cut off his wings, so that his wings would not get them all killed. His younger sister was born when he was 4, though she, thankfully, did not have wings. Ty kept his magic hidden, and for a while, things were fine. His sister, however, showed her abilities when she was 4, in a way that was impossible to hide; she lit a priest on fire with nothing but her eyes. As a result, she was executed. His parents were as well. As he was seen as "normal", he became a ward of the church, where he pushed his powers further and further down. Talking about magic tears at him, because while part of him cannot believe a child would ever deserve death, he has had "magic is evil" hammered into his skull for years and years. While he hates the death of children, he believes that it can be necessary in order to eradicate magic, which he can only see as harmful and leading to pain. Ty has been used as an assassin/mercenary ever since he was 16, and is quite used to causing death. All the stress, anger, pain, and fear from everything he went through as a child prematurely greyed his hair; he was grey by 14.
