“You’re too kind…” she muttered, though till doubtful. “But still… there’s no way. Besides,” she shifted in her seat, “it’s not so bad. This doesn’t happen all the time. It is better than having no work and no home.”
“You’re too kind…” she muttered, though till doubtful. “But still… there’s no way. Besides,” she shifted in her seat, “it’s not so bad. This doesn’t happen all the time. It is better than having no work and no home.”
"It doesn't matter if it happens all the time, dove it's wrong and you know it's wrong it's not like you'll have no place to live I could get you a job In the palace you'll never have to worry about them again"
Images flashed through her mind: her stepmother locking her in her room so she couldn’t leave, her stepbrothers at the door, itching to feel their fists connect with her rib cage; waiting at the palace gaits, being turned away for being a peasant girl or worse, a witch; and most surprising of all, her late father. ”I’m so disappointed and saddened,” he would moan, ”the family I left behind is breaking apart because of you.”
Then a chill ran through her. She looked at the princess with some fear in her eyes. “With all due respect, Your Highness, I do not know you, and I have never been to the palace. I can’t just leave my fami— “ she put a hand to her mouth to stop herself, then cleared her throat. “I can’t just leave them and go work at the palace if I don’t know if it will be better for me there. Why would you offer this to me? You do not know me either.”
Alice looked at dice a little confused now as she spoke "I'm offering this to you so you are safe if you do not wish to report it I can't make you but I can't sit by and allow it to happen who would I be my job is to protect my people how can I do this if my help is refused? "
Dove shook her head, unsure and rather anxious. “I’m sorry Your Highness, I…” she sighed. “You’re too kind. I suppose I am just… afraid.” She tugged her shawl tighter around herself, not looking at the princess.
Alice nodding understanding where dove was coming from and looked away as well feeling she had just made things awkward
Dove pondered on the situation for a few moments. Maybe she was being a fool, refusing such a kindness from the princess. The images flashed through her mind again, but now they saddened her as well as frightened her.
“I think… I think I will accept your offer, but I cannot go to the palace just now. There are many ways it could go awry. I will go when I feel it is best.”
Cautiously, she turned to Alice again. “Princess, I admit that I don’t know you, but I want to get to know you more. Would you… would you keep visiting me? If it is not too much trouble…”
Alice smiled at dove when she reconsidered and nodded "of course I just wouldn't wait to long my father will most likely tell you tell same thing I did, but take all the time you need I'll visit you whenever I'm able of course you don't have to worry about that it's no trouble. "
Ah, the princess’s smile was so lovely. Dove managed to to return it. “Thank you. I know I’ve said it before, probably too much, but you are very kind to me, Your Highness.” Gingerly, she touched her black eye. “Maybe I’ll just… stay here. I don’t want to go back just now.”
Alice blushed slightly and bowed her head "I am kind because you deserve it dove. " she looked up when dove said she would stay there and she was instantly worried "I will stay here with you then you shouldn't be out here alone and it's only right I bring you home seeing as though I brought you here"
Dove searched Alice’s face. She was unsure of what she meant by those words, but something about it made her smile fall.
She laughed a little, though. “What is that worried face of yours for? I’m alright, just aching a little. But thank you for staying with me.” She paused, her gaze flickering downward. “Hm, alright…”
"This is a new place neither of us have been to I'd rather not leave you here and something bad happen I'd never forgive myself if that were the case"
“No, no, of course not,” Dove shook her head, taking the princess’s hand in an attempt to comfort her. When she realized what she did, she pulled her hand away. “Oh! I’m so sorry Your Highness, I didn’t mean to touch you like that. My apologies.” She looked away, embarrassed.
Alice was shocked at first but not angered at all just a little surprised "why would you be sorry? You did nothing wrong. "
“I wasn’t thinking, and I didn’t ask you,” Dove said, eyes still downcast. “I bet if your guard was here, he would never allow me to touch you.”
She smiled softly "ya know I think he'd like you now of course he might not want you to touch me because it's his job to protect me but he's like my brother he's a good guy just doesn't want to see me hurt. "
She managed a small chuckle. “Really?” Finally facing the princess, she murmured, “Still, I don’t know why I did that…”

Alice laughed as well "yes really. "
She gave a slight shruh of her shoulders 'I'm not really sure. "
Dove shrugged back. “Never mind it then, Your Highness.” She started playing with her shawl a little, tugging at it with her fingers. “Anyway… would you, um, would you want to get to know each other better?”
Alice smiled a little as she looked around the cave once more before bringing her attention back to dove "oh! Yes that would be very nice I'd like to do that. "
Dove smiled too when she saw Alice’s enthusiasm. “Alright. Ah…” she hid her face behind her hands. “I… I’m not good at this, princess. Um… well, you’re the princess, so… maybe you should start?” She took her hands away and looked sheepishly at her.
Alice laughed a little "you don't have to be nervous I promise, an I do have a few questions for you I suppose… What exactly are your hobbies what do you like to do? "
“Um…” she reached a hand to her neck. “I don’t have a lot of time for hobbies… but I know how to sew, and I like to sew little things and mend my clothes. And I like helping out our chef in the kitchen. He’s good to me. And you?”
Alice was quiet for a minute before she spoke "I uh.. Have no idea I'm not really allowed to do anything around the palace I can't even help my hand maid clean when I'm bored, I guess sneaking out is my hobby. "
