“It’s been two weeks already,” I tried not to seem angry, but I failed. “I’m the only one left. There’s literally absolute nothing, no sign of whatever power I might have gotten.”
“It’s been two weeks already,” I tried not to seem angry, but I failed. “I’m the only one left. There’s literally absolute nothing, no sign of whatever power I might have gotten.”
I fidgeted anxiously, reaching instinctively towards him. “Kaden, you’re going to be alright. Some people have waited months tha to get their powers! You don’t have to worry about it, you’ll be fine.
I don’t know why I suddenly just felt angry in that moment. I always had a hard grip on my anger. I was a cool-headed person, but I felt anger and disappoint rolling off of me.
“You have no idea how it feels being the only one left out, how it feels when others point at you and laugh because you’ve yet to show your powers,” I hissed, making eye contact, teeth gritting. “So Andreas, just stop, drop the subject and eat.”
Andreas’s eyes immediately blanked out and he looked away from me, reaching out for his muffin and taking small bites.
Hope immediately swatted me with her tail, breaking off whatever concentration I was on, her eyes flashing. Right as the string broke, her eyes returned to normal.
”You used your powers,” she said slowly, as if unable to believe it. ”On Andreas. You hypnotized him, Kaden.”
Andreas immediately stopped eating and I felt guilt course through me. What sort of an idiot was I, doing that to my best friend?
For a moment, there was nothing. My mind went white. My vision went black. I forgot how to hear, how to feel, how to see. I forgot how to think.
And suddenly, it all came rushing back. Colour, sound—the blues of each uniform, the amiable chattering of the hall. I gasped for air, my blood turning to icy slush in my veins. I stared at the fork in my hand, letting it fall and clatter to the floor. Then, I turned my frightened eyes to Kaden.
“What. Was. That?”
I looked at Andreas with just as much fear, my hands shaking. What did I just do? What did I just do to Andreas?
"I–I… I'm so sorry…" I stammered, my head pounding heavily. "I didn't mean to–I just… I should leave. I'm so sorry."
I immediately stood up and pulled Hope to me, my eyes still wide. What did Hope just say? I hypnotized Andreas? I force my best friend in doing something he didn't do in his own free will? I controlled his mind? I was such a hopeless idiot. I desperately wished for my powers and when I finally showed signs of them, I used them on Andreas.
Each word I spoke was punctuated by a harsh tremble.
“I’ll—I’ll come with you.” My legs felt like jelly, my sight still blurred and distorted. Through a haze, I felt Copper’s claws scrabbling up my arm, his nose frantically poking my cheek.
”Andreas??”
I swallowed thickly, stumbling to my feet. “Dormitory. Now.”
I immediately wrapped my arms around Andreas's shoulder, guilt crushing me.
"I'm so sorry, Andreas… I don't know what came over me…" I apologized again, helping him stand. I looked anywhere but at him, afraid I might do it again. What sort of power was this for a healer? What would I even do with this?
I shook my head, pulling myself from his grip and shouldering past the crowd.
Once we were in the hall, I leaned against the wall, rubbing my eyes and reassuring Copper that I was okay.
I was being unfair, I knew, but his unintended actions had shaken me to the core as much as his words had angered me.
You don’t know what it’s like to be left out.
Yeah. Right.
I watched him leave, hurt adding to the guilt I was feeling.
"Kaden?" Hope wiggled out of my hold and climbed on my shoulder, nuzzling my cheek. "It's okay. It was an accident."
"I messed up, Hope…" I whispered, not even bothering to speak in her mind. "I messed up really bad… What if he starts hating me? Hope, he can't hate me."
"He doesn't hate you, Kaden," Hope whispered, licking my cheek affectionately. "Just give him some time."
"I'm such an idiot…"
A few minutes passed, and my shock and anger dispersed, leaving me with nothing but a bucketload of shame and guilt. Kaden… I’m sorry….
He hadn’t come after me. And why should he? However much I wanted him here, wanted to apologize… I didn’t really deserve another chance after getting upset about something he hadn’t tried to do.
”It’s okay,” Copper spoke in my mind. ”He won’t be upset—he blames himself.”
“That’s even worse!” I blurted, not caring that I was speaking aloud. Copper fell silent, and I heaved a sigh. “I’m sorry. I just…. I wish he would come out… so we can talk.”
”Go talk to him,” Hope said gently, rubbing her cheek against mine. ”Clear it out.”
“I can’t,” I rasped out. “He doesn’t want to talk to me. He pushed me away, Hope!”
Hope bit my ear, causing me to yelp.
“Okay! I’ll… I’ll go talk to him…”
I exited the dining hall slowly, fiddling with my fingers, afraid of the balant rejection I was sure I was going to get. Andreas was still there with Copper and I felt my heart clench.
“Andrias…” I found myself whispering his name.
My head turned abruptly, relief completely overtaking my expression.
“Kaden…” I breathed, pushing myself off the wall and throwing my arms around him. “I’m sorry….” I whispered, burying my face in his shoulder. I braced myself, fully expecting him to shove me away. “I’m so sorry…”
I immediately wrapped my arms around him, hugging him back tightly.
“No, I’m sorry,” I forced out. “I shouldn’t have gotten angry like that. I shouldn’t have said those things to you. Please forgive me, Andrias… please don’t hate me. I’m so, so sorry…”
I sank into his embrace, hyperaware of everywhere we touched. “Of course I forgive you…” Swallowing, I exhaled slowly. “I’m sorry. I know you couldn’t control it—I just got upset because—Because I’m tired of being… used.” My volume dipped on the last word.
I pulled away from Andreas, lifted his face up and pressed a kiss on his forehead, my lips burning when I pulled away.
“I will never use you, Andreas,” I whispered, pulling him back into the hug. “You mean a lot to me. Even thinking about what I did to you pains me… I never want you to go through that again. I’m sorry…”
My mouth fell open in shock, eyes widening. Almost instantly, heat flooded my whole body until every inch of me was burning. I took a stumbling step backwards, red in the face. “Did I burn you?” I asked frantically, reaching for him then pulling back when my hands started to smoke.
I looked at his hot self (pun intended) and then immediately burst out laughing.
“You are so adorable,” I chuckled, shaking my head. “I’m okay, you didn’t burn me. You can calm down now.”
How on earth was I supposed to calm down when Kaden was calling me adorable?
I covered my face with my hands, my cheeks almost as red as my hair. Luckily, a teacher had spelled my clothes fire-proof last week, but that didn’t stop the carpet at my feet from beginning to smoke.
Now I started to panic.
"Andreas! Come on, man, calm down," I tried to keep the smile off of my face. "You're burning the carpet. We might end up working to pay for the damage we cause!"
Which, naturally, only heightened my panic.
But eventually, after enough tail-spikes from Copper, I managed to calm down.
“Sorry…” I murmured, embarrassment coating m my cheeks.
I sighed in relief.
"It's all right," I brushed it off with a light laugh. "It was an accident. Two accidents in one hour. We're such idiots."
“We are,” I laughed weakly, rubbing at my still-burning cheeks.

[TIME SKIP] Colton's POV:
"Again," I ordered harshly, shooting a red flame at Elliot, one of the weakest flames I could produce. We were practicing Elliot's defense, considering the fact that he was a Defender. I was teaching him one of the basic Water Type defense technique: Wind Shield. It involved creating a stable ball of water around you. In the defense system, the water revolved at an incredible speed, dispelling almost everything that came your way. As long as it was a weak attack.
Water flew from the multiple large buckets surrounding me. But it was slippery in both a mental and physical sense, and I quickly lost control. The clear liquid exploded in all directions, dousing the fire—but drenching Colton as a result.
