Robert was silent for quite a while. Never had he met such a disagreeable, thankless person. He turned to the other man, giving him a smile. “You’re welcome, giant fellow.”
Turning to ‘Alphonse,’ his brow twitched. “I see. Well, if you like Geneva so much, why are you running away from it? I should like to see you try finding a non-English captain who would be willing to let you aboard.”
“It’s the monster’s fault. If anyone else found out what he really was… well, I’d be written off as insane, or worse, defying God. Both of which are not entirely inaccurate observations, but I don’t personally prefer admitting to them.” he said, “and I was in Germany at the time. Ingolstadt, their university. I just happened to cross over to where you were docked, a greatly unfortunate thing in my opinion as you’ve been the opposite of hospitable since we’ve gotten here. Giving me even more reason to dislike your kind.” Victor blinked, twice, drank some of the mead and laid back. He was as aware as anyone else that if he didn’t get rid of his creation, he’d never go home. He’d been denying that truth for a while, though.
His gaze flickered to the tall man again. “… Interesting,” was all he said before a strange wave of sadness came over him at the tiny man’s words. Unfortunately, his expression betrayed this.
“…. Oh. Well, if you don’t want to go to England, then make sure you leave before we set off and make sure you’re not seen. If you stay, then you do not have to stay in England once we get there,” he murmured. “Tell me, in what way have I been inhospitable? There’s only so much I can offer you.”
“Well, I can’t just leave the wretch. He doesn’t know his left hand from his right, and besides, I don’t care to explain every little way you’ve offended me.” Victor sighed, continued to lean back into the cargo. “A man with such little ambition as yours truly shouldn’t make his head spin with matters such as these.” and then the creature decided something. He’d mostly just sat and watch Victor abuse the only man who’d ever shown him kindness, in his entire short life. In the biggest move of agency he’d made against Victor yet, he said: “V- Alphonse, please. The Captain is obviously feeling troubled with how you speak of him. I know it isn’t my place, but perhaps we should rest for the night. We’ll find other places to go, but… but for now, I think Captain Walton needs to take care of his crew. It’s been a good few minutes since he came down here, they must be worrying and sooner or later if we keep this up, they’ll find him… and us.” Victor looked stunned. The creature never spoke up like this, and he wasn’t used to it. And he was right. “Fine, have it your way. Control my life even more since you have been, coming into existence the way you have.”
(Honestly the thing I love about Victor is that he’s really just a stupid kid. He keeps trying to act heroic, he keeps trying to be something he’s not, but deep down he’s a scared child who’s made too many mistakes and can’t go back from them at this point.)
(He’s also a massive prick tho so ya know. It balances out.)
(Agreed. Your characterization of him is very intriguing. Lol i still feel like I’m projecting onto Robert tho)
(Cool lol.)
(Lol honestly he just feels like one of my soft boi characters but with a chaotic side. I think the thing that really gets me is the way he and Victor clash so much.)
(Gets you in a good or bad way?)
(Good way. Interesting character dynamics, and all that)
(Neat.)

He almost let them alone. He had better things to do that engage in a conversation that would only lead to disagreement and hurt. But then the giant spoke up, leaving Robert’s mouth hanging slightly open. His lips spread into a small smile, and he acknowledged the large man with a grateful nod.
“Yes. I… I have business to attend to.” His voice was rather soft. “Do what you will, I’m sure you know what you’re doing. In any case, eat well.” He would have said God be with you, but he kept Alphonse’s earlier words in mind. Turning on his heel, he left their presence. When the other crew saw him, they must have seen something in his face because they asked if something happened. He waved them off, then prepared for departure.
It was a few weeks before either saw Robert for such a long period of time again. The man was simply too busy on the ship to be able to do much more than deliver food that Victor refused to eat in the Captain’s presence. He was too much of a prideful stupid practically-teenager to do that. The creature didn’t eat much, he didn’t need meat to survive thanks to Victor’s handiwork and he didn’t need more than a few bites to get by even if he got dizzy with hunger after a few days of shunning food. So he sat there and waited. And when they finally fully saw Robert again, they were in England, London specifically, docked in the Thames. Anna and Margaret lived and worked in the country, and so they were just going to pass through there before they left for the country according to Robert’s mumblings when he visited.
(Changing my lore for the sake of that cottagecore lifestyle™️)
(Ugh I can't wait for the queer pining to start ahhhh- also highkey wanting my version of the Monster in this to be transfem just on a writer whim and I need to get those ideas out of my brain.)
(Ahhhh yes yes! I love that! I will respond when I can ^^)
(Also yes we love that lesbian cottagecore life)
(Cool, and cool.)
At first, Robert had been content with letting the stowaways sneak off into the city once they arrived, but with each rare visit, it was clear that they needed more help than that. So, he offered them his family's home until they could get back on their feet. Sometimes he would worry for the tall fellow, with his apparent fasting and hastily treated injury, but worrying was all he did. He couldn't do much about it. Alphonse made him sad when he thought about him, so Robert didn't think of him much.
All of Alphonse's hurtful comments aside, England was home. Even though he loved his work and travel, Robert was glad to be back. After the chaotic process of docking, cleaning up the ship, meeting with the dock and shipowners, and paying the crew, he snuck back aboard to get the stowaways. The crew did not find them during the cleanup, so he hoped they had hidden away in the cargo somewhere.
Which, they had. They had hidden quite well, Victor actually going so far as to sneak into one of the boxes on the ship and the creature having hidden himself under a tarp. When it seemed like they were gone, the creature exited the cargo hold in order to find the Captain, he turned out to be right in that there seemed to be only the two stowaways on the ship. Victor exited his box, and started to wander around the ship himself, not touching anything so as not to get caught snooping around, or at least to decrease the likelyhood of that happening.
Robert found the giant first, some distance away from the cargo. "There you are, friend," he said, rounding the corner and approaching him. "The coast is clear, and hopefully I will be able to get you off the ship with no one noticing. Where's Alphonse?" he asked, looking around to see if he could spot the small man.
"He left minutes ago. I think I saw him near your quarters, sir." he said, swaying on his feet back and forth in nervousness. He kept forgetting that Victor was using his father's name, a strange thing since as far as he knew, Victor deeply disliked his father. It was mostly guesswork to infer that, as the creature didn't truly know much about Victor's family, but he at least knew that Victor complained about his father a lot.
“My quarters, eh?” Robert raised an eyebrow. “Let’s go fetch him, shall we?”
He gestured for the tall figure to follow, leading the way up the floors of the ship until they came to his quarters, which was near the stern. His pace was brisk. There was no reason to suspect anything yet, but if the tiny man did turn out to be a thief after all these weeks, Robert would be very disappointed.
Victor wasn’t bothering to steal anything. His family was quite well off, what reason had he to steal? No, he was quite content in simply looking around, until he came across a journal. Robert’s journal, in fact, written in sloppy handwriting, the thing looked quite rushed. He started to open it up, just as the Captain entered. “Hello, again.” there was a distinct pause, like ‘again’ was a truly unfortunate event indeed.
