(Aww, well I'll accept that I guess. Luvs you!)
Victor and his creation crept through the moonlit docks, looking to find a ship they could stow away on, just for a while. The two had been found out, and Victor had been heralded as crazy by everyone within a thirty mile radius so ultimately they had to get the heck out of dodge. His monster was no better, given the whole "being shot by terrified villagers" thing. He limped after Victor, who was walking at an inhumanly fast pace and making it very difficult to keep up without screaming in agony. But Victor was not one to consider the needs of a useless monster, so he reasoned, and thus the creature followed as best he could.
Victor found an empty ship, and had the creature hoist him up so he could lower the plank that was used to enter the ship. Then he let the creature walk up, wordlessly slipping through to the lower decks and tugging the creature along when he got too slow.
(theyre sneaking into roberts ship btw)
(I figured as much)
(Awww ye <333)
The empty ship wasn’t exactly empty. Captain Robert Walton sat in his candlelit cabin, composing a letter to his sister. Simply filling her in on the journey so far, how they had arrived in Geneva but had to wait till morning to receive word if they were good to leave.
As he was about to punctuate the end of a sentence, he caught the faint sound of a wooden thud. Robert was just starting to feel tired, but the sound made him curious. Making a small, inquiring noise, he set his quill pen down and got up from his seat. The thud could’ve been his imagination, but what was the harm in investigating? He opened the door to his cabin and stepped out into the hallway.
Victor froze, then drew a gun in a flash of movement so quick you could barely see it. "Who are you and why are you here? I assumed everyone was down at the inn, I swear…" the creature flinched when he pointed the gun at Robert.
"Victor, I'm sure he means no harm." the soft voice of the creature spoke, meek and unable to meet either man's eyes. Victor gave a harsh growl.
"We can't trust him not to hurt us. I'm merely taking safety precautions, for your sake. Not like you deserve it, with your lack of wit or charm to convince me of your worthiness." he said, looking back to Robert. "Name, intentions, and rank on the ship." he said coolly, hiding the fear in every part of himself but his eyes and shaking hands.
Robert also froze at the sight of the strange men and the gun. At least it made him feel more awake. His eyes widened and his brow rose up into his forehead.
“Woah, woah, easy,” he said. He didn’t feel afraid, not yet. “I should be asking you the same thing. Why have you come aboard my ship? Why would I have a reason to harm you?”
The man with the gun was so… tiny, Robert couldn’t really feel threatened by him, even if he was armed. The other was a giant, but he caught the softness in his voice. And if he looked closely, he saw blood dripping onto the floor. The man was injured.
“My good men, please,” he said, concern coming into his expression now. “Lower your weapon. If you are criminals, you can just say so. I won’t blabber, but I cannot offer you shelter if you are.”
"The only crime I ever committed was knowing too much. The world wasn't ready for my ideas." Victor said, still holding up the gun, hands shaking further. He really was a small man, smaller than Robert, with flitting eyes that couldn't meet the man's face. The gun wasn't even loaded, but then again, how would Robert know that? "And his only crime was… well, existing in such a manner that one can't help but look away in terror. We are not criminals, but I am prepared to become one if it means keeping myself alive. My knowledge is too important to lose."
Now Robert was confused, and you could tell by the way he frowned and his eyebrows twisted up. He cautiously reached out and lowered the small man’s shaking hand.
“Ah… alright… “ he murmured uncertainly. “Since you haven’t broken the law, at least, you can take refuge here. Let me show you where you can stay, and we’ll do introductions later. You, sir,” he gestured to the giant. “You are hurt. Can you tell me where?”
He began leading them further down the hall, motioning for them to follow. In all honesty, he wasn’t sure if this was the wisest decision, but these men clearly needed help. What else could Robert have done?
The creature mumbled something, but Victor shut those words down. “I was a medical student at Ingolstadt. I can treat it.” he said, dropping the empty gun and turning away, pale face flushed with embarrassment. “Unfortunately I can’t quite trust your level of expertise on matters like this.” he said, now detached and aloof.
The creature shook his head behind Victor, looking down at his feet. This person, this… captain, perhaps, seemed quite gentle. Perhaps Victor had misjudged him, but Victor never misjudged anything really.
Robert glanced at the tiny man with a frown. "Alright then. There are medical supplies on the ship if you need them."
He led them into the lower deck, into the cargo hold. Wooden crates and barrels were littered everywhere or stacked on each other. Most of this was simply cargo for the ship itself, the cargo they had meant to transport to Geneva was already gone.
"You can stay here," Robert offered. "My crew is all at the bar, but you will need to hide from them in the morning. They don't appreciate stowaways, and I can't have them thinking I appreciate them too." He chuckled to himself, leaning against a barrel. "Now, what are your names?"
"Alphonse." Victor lied through his teeth, using his father's name as an alias for the time being. "And I will be amenable to those terms. The giant doesn't have a name, and I doubt he needs one. Just call him 'monster'. I doubt he minds." he said. The creature looked at Robert, and then away, saying nothing. Victor looked around in the supplies for a few moments before returning with a knife and some thread, already having a needle on hand. He had the creature sit down and then cut open the creature's leg, causing his monster to grimace in pain and let out a small noise, but Victor ignored that to pick the bullet out of flesh and muscle with bare fingers and then went to sew up the leg. When he had finished, the creature was sweating from holding back the pain, but at least Victor had somewhat fixed the problem.
Robert looked between them, confused again. The dim light and the tall figure’s long hair was just enough to hide his face, so Robert didn’t know what the smaller man meant by “monster.”
“Alphonse,” he repeated. “A pleasure to make your acquaintance, but you seem to be speaking for the tall fellow here a lot…
He winced as Alphonse began treating the giant’s injury, making a small, “Oh,” of surprise when he plucked out the bullet. He had witnessed or been a part of instances like this before, but he certainly didn’t expect it to happen here and now. He looked away for the rest, only looking back when Alphonse was done.
Stepping up to the giant, he asked, “Are you alright sir? I’m Robert, the captain of this ship.” For a moment he addressed them both, saying, “You can simply refer to me as the captain for now.” Then he turned back to the tall fellow. “And you? What do you want me to call you? I’d hate to call you something like that.”
"Monster is fitting enough, sir." the creature mumbled, slouching further into the barrels supporting his back. He looked at Victor with some fear in his eyes, but also a strange reverence, like a child to an impressive prince or king, perhaps even a worshipper of a god. Victor coughed, waving for Robert to leave the room. "He's not meant to talk, not meant to have opinions. He's just a fleshy automaton, now please take your exit." he said sharply, arrogant acting like he could control the captain on his own ship.
(yo I got gummy brains from the store and i have never kinned Victor more lol.)
(Lol I love that. Also sorry for my absence, having my bday weekend and also kinda emotionally exhausted rn)
(Oh cool! My friends birthday is tomorrow! But hap borth anyways.)

Robert frowned again, deeper this time. The more time he spent with these two, the more they concerned him. “Sir, that’s quite insulting and brutalizing of you to say. For the sake of this man’s dignity, I will not call him such a terrible thing. ‘Giant’ or ‘tall fellow’ will do.” The volume of his voice rose with his anger. “I don’t understand your relationship with each other, but at least treat this man with decency.”
Indeed, Robert was rarely ordered around on his own ship, but after thinking about it, he found a reason to leave anyway. “I will find you some blankets to sleep with,” he announced, and went around the room to find a crate with something the two stowaways could use.
Victor growled. "I treat him with the decency a monster like him deserves…" he mumbled, when Robert was out of earshot. The creature flinched, but didn't respond, rocking back and forth in his seat and trying to manage the slightly alleviated pain. He was more resilient than most, but then again, he also wasn't immortal… to his knowledge. Things still hurt. He looked towards the wooden ceiling, where water dripped just inches from his face. He should fix that, Victor hated when the roof leaked.
Sure enough, there was a wooden crate stuffed with folded blankets and quilts, usually for the winter or when the ship traveled to arctic waters. Robert carefully lifted two of them from the crate, then took them over and set them in front of Alphonse and the giant.
“Here you are,” he said. He was beginning to grow tired again, but there were still some things he wanted to know.
“Now, would be comfortable in telling me what happened before you boarded my ship?” He held his hands clasped in front of him, and rose one eyebrow, indicating his lingering confusion.
“I would not be comfortable relaying that to you, no. You would think me mad, like all the others, and I can’t have that.” Victor said. “If you are to offer sanctuary, it should be unconditional. All I’ve been seeing you do is add conditions. I won’t be leaving if you’ll have me, but I also won’t be staying long, mark my words.” Victor took a blanket, handed the larger quilt to his creation, and rested his head on the back of a crate thoughtfully; he was still sitting up but it was clear he was used to sitting up to sleep. "If you push this subject, your life will become certain hell whilst I am here."
(Lol Victor’s just trying to get himself booted out at this point. Anyways, I may not be super active the next few days because of work schedules being hell, one of my co-workers just had a kid so I’m stuck trying to cover for her in order to get extra green paper because I have nothing better to do with my life.)
Robert's brow knotted up again. "You aren't very agreeable, are you sir?" His fingers began to play with each other, making flicking motions or hiding the thumb between two fingers. "And my sanctuary is unconditional. I'm not going to force you overboard if you're not going tell me, I just want to understand what kind of people I provided santuary for. But I suppose you telling me that I would think you mad tells me all I need to know. Perhaps its good that you stay here, away from the upper decks."
