"Hockey's her life, dude." Kai said, nudging Henry back. "It's her last connection to dad." Her looked out at Babe, who was practically flying through the drill course.
"Hockey's her life, dude." Kai said, nudging Henry back. "It's her last connection to dad." Her looked out at Babe, who was practically flying through the drill course.
"And she's really good." Henry watched her closely, noting the sharpness of each move, how well trained she was.
"Yeah, she is." Kai nodded, watching Babe kick up a spray of ice for no particular reason. "Did you know she talks about you at home? Well, the whole team, and this girl she met in her PE class, but mostly you."
Henry paused for a minute. "All good things, I hope?" He snuck a look at Kai, wondering if he was telling the truth. She talked about him? To her family?
"Oh, yeah." Kai looked back over at Henry with a snort. "She thinks you're great. At first, I was pretty sure you didn't even actually exist, and then you were there at the record shop."
"Oh." Henry grinned. "I am pretty great." He said thoughtfully, looking out at the ice. "Not sure why she'd think that, though." He took another gulp of water while he watched Babe on the ice.
"Dude, you were her first friend when we got here." Kai said, pulling his legs up onto the seat. "She was about ready to buy a bus ticket back to New York. And then something clicked, apparently?" He looked back out at his sister with a laugh.
Henry's grin widened. "That's cool. Have you met any friends yet?" He thought through everyone he knew, wondering if any of them liked mechanics and building things like Kai did.
"I, uh, met this girl…" Kai's cheeks turned a rosy color, and he tugged a hand through his hair, much the same way Babe did. "She's in my robotics class…"
"Oh really?" Henry turned to grin at Kai. "That's interesting. Is she cute?" He watched Kai closely, enjoying how uncomfortable he looked.
Kai's blush deepened, and he looked down at his lap. "I mean-uh, yeah, sure sh-she's cute." He stuttered out, nodding.
Henry nodded, still smiling and raised his eyebrows. "And she likes robotics? And she's smart?" He prompted, not stopping just yet.
"Y-yeah." Kai said, once again tugging a hand through his hair. "She's insanely smart. And she can build anything with just a couple of parts. She's a goddess at robotics."
Henry clapped Kai on the shoulder. "Then she sounds perfect for you. You should ask her out." He glanced back up, wondering how much longer he had before Babe would get after them again.
"I can't just ask her out." Kai said, shaking his head. "She's way too good for me. Anyway, now might be a good time for you to get back out there. I'd recommend finding a way to keep her from skating too much, too, with that ankle injury. It's got to be bugging her again."
"Just keep going at it, she'll say yes eventually. And you're right, here goes another round of torture." Henry tightened his skates and pushed himself back out onto the ice. "Hey Babe, ready for another round?"
Babe looked up as she finished the drill another time, grinning. "Look atcha, gettin' it over with." She motioned to the set-up. "Help me clean this up?"
"Sure can." He skated around slowly, gathering everything and stacking it by the wall. He watched Babe's movements, each stroke of the skate looking clean and professional.
Babe scanned the supplies for a few moments, before setting up what looked like an obstacle course. She blew the whistle sharply, letting the others know break was over, before skating off the ice and disappearing.
"Well then." Henry lined up with the others, awkward whispers and mutters scattering around the rink. Where was she?
Babe skated back onto the ice a few minutes later, grumbling to herself in Spanish. She had a coil of rope in hand, and her muttering, once in English, was about hand cuffs.
"Wait, Babe did you say.. Hand cuffs?" The boys slid a few steps back, now actually nervous. There was no telling what Babe was capable of.
Babe ignored them, slipping out a pocket knife and eyeing the length of rope. "Pair up again, same teams or different, it don' matter."
The boys switched partners, anxiously awaiting whatever she had planned. "What did you mean, handcuffs?" Henry asked once more.
"I meant, handcuffs." Babe said, raising an eyebrow at him before cutting at the rope. Once satisfied, she motioned for a team to come forward.
