My rough draft is so bad, and it's really discouraging. Am I alone in this?

if your rough draft sucks, good job! that means u can actually write a first draft!! sometimes when I write first drafts I overthink everything, so I get a nonsensical but polished mess that most likely never gets finished. I've managed to write one rough draft that was actually rough. crappy rough drafts are easier to finish and to edit, so good job.

just tell yourself that it's MEANT to be shit, and if it's not shit then you're either a prodigy or doing something very very wrong!

Don't worry about it, every single published author will tell you that their first drafts suck. That's just how it is. Some authors say they aren't good writers, but they're good REwriters.

Thank you so much to everyone who replied and made me cry happy tears. I feel so blessed to know that there are other writers out there who will be there to support me. I hope I can do the same for all of you. :')

I mean,

best advice i ever heard when it comes to editing is not to edit at all. read over your draft then put it away, and re-write your whole story. you know where the plot is going and what the important events are so you don't have to worry about it, you can focus on making it flow more nicely. first drafts are meant to be bad, its why they're first drafts. professional writers can go through a dozen drafts before they decide their story is good enough.
