There are a few good aspects of the story, and I fixed the characters so they're less cliche. Any tips on what to do next?

@Masterkey

Well I'm in the middle of doing exactly that.

I actually wrote 120,000+ words worth of a first draft of a story when I was 15, a story I had been brooding over since I was 12. Right before I got to the climax I quit. I had no passion for it anymore, and I actually really hated it.

Then maybe a year ago I couldn't stop thinking about it. So I picked it back up and gave it the makeover of its life.

Basically you have to be brave enough to scrap everything you know about it. Maybe there are parts that you THINK will be good elements. Maybe there are parts you absolutely love. But you most likely will have to let them go. Start letting your imagination explore ideas you never let yourself go to before, and suddenly (no not suddenly, I've been working through this thing for months) you'll have yourself a new and improved story.

I basically got rid of everything besides some character names, character roles, some basic geography of the world. The entire plot changed (besides some important elements that I was surprised worked so well with the new story). It was awesome! Back stories changed, personalities changed (for the better, geez), heck, even skin colors changed. JUST LET YOURSELF GO MAN.
