Hey! I'm trying to make a new world for a comic I want to make and I'm trying to figure out what order I should make everything. I'm asking so as I build my world, I can link stuff with things I've already made(like making a country first, then linking it with various locations or vice versa). What order do you all suggest I go with?
Start with the character and move outward maybe? Like home, parts of town, major history, state?
I use the dart method where I make a crazy phrase like "socialist lizard people" and see how I can think outside the box to make a unique world. Then once you have a general system for whatever scope of world your looking to make, think of occupations and write about a character's experience in that job.
My worldbuilding is extremely unorganized. I work on what I feel like working on, but I love @redcherry's idea.
I usually start with finding inspiration for a world, as I find then it sort of builds itself in my mind and I don't have to do as much question asking.
What's most important is that you are able to conjure up an idea that you can use as a base. It doesn't have to be anything detailed, just a concept. Since this is a comic, you may want to decide if you are prioritizing the story or the aesthetic. Putting together Pinterest boards helps for nurturing ideas for me. But don't get too technical early on and you should be good.
To clarify, when I say to develop a concept a single scene or a single aspect of the world are good places to start.
If you can find a singular event that you believe your story will be focused on, you can take that event and ask yourself questions about it to create the rest of your world's history. Like why did it happen? Who were the main authority figures/ heroes involved? Why are they important? Why was this event important? And what did it change?
