What foods do your fictional races, creatures, etc. typically eat?

Me: * looks over at your OC's table * I'll have what they're having

@Riorlyne pets

Ztang is a drink for celebrations. It consists of juiced plums (with perhaps some plum wine, depending on who makes it) and an array of spices including cloves, peppercorns and nutmeg. It's served piping hot.

If you get a plum stone (called a 'plum heart' in the local language) in your drink, it's tradition to throw it at the person you fancy. If it lands in their drink though, it's a sign your love is doomed.

As one of my races relies heavily on seafood for economy, a lot of their dishes are based on seafood, be it imported from other planets, or, more commonly, fished from their own. One common dish is the Kozing (cause-zing) which is basically a type of fish that swims in large groups which makes it easy to capture in large quantities. The fish has been described to have a taste similar to calamari, and can even be eaten raw by almost every race capable of eating meat (including humans). The raw version is described to taste "juicier" and similar to the fish kept in sushi, but cooked it is similar to squid. Traditionally it is served without sauce or salt. It is commonly served alongside a fruit native to only the planet. The fruit is grown on plants that are extremely poisonous (the plant itself is covered in small hooks) which may deter some from eating the fruit. The fruit is never to be cooked, and should be eaten raw for cultural reasons. The fruit has been described as somewhat tart towards the inside, but on the outer layer sweet. The fruit is soft to bite into. It has no seeds inside, making it a favourite among those who prefer not to have seeds stuck in their teeth.
Most of the foods on their world are seafood and served raw, which can also turn others away, however most of them are proven safe to eat, and the ones that are not for outsiders and/or people that cannot process certain raw foods are prohibited to sell unauthorized or on the streets.

@Yamatsu

My half-dragon character usually eats anything put in front of him, but he eats both raw and cooked food. Seeing as there aren't any unusual fauna aside from dragons and wyverns, some dishes that his mother cooked for him mostly came in pots. Pasta e fagioli, chili, gumbo, clam chowder, stews (most common because they live in the mountains). Any fancy ingredients were acquired outside, and usually were saved for special occasions. Cooked vegetables like carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, green beans, etc. were put in salads or cooked in sauces. Desserts were rare due to the time it took to make them, but his favorites included spiced breads, cookies, and cornerstones.

Taken straight from the C-Team Acquisitions Incorporated game, cornerstones are like Zeppoli that you'd get at Olive Garden, except they're bigger, fried outside, pillowy inside, covered in powdered sugar, and filled with a spoonful of jam (usually strawberry, but black currant is also popular, and pomegranate if you're feeling adventurous). They're a family recipe, passed down and permuted by those who thought they could do better. One of his great aunts thought that they should be filled with chocolate, but it only works with dark chocolate. Another great uncle thought that they should instead be served with a chocolate dipping sauce, and he was almost excommunicated from the holiday dinner table all those years ago.

@milktea_wizard

Mojack, I like the thought put into why the foods are eaten in a certain way!

Yamatsu, those cornerstones sound delicious! That bit about the great uncle at the end made me laugh, I love the touch of a family story in worldbuilding!

In my world there is so called magic food where the food is made purely out of magic. In these parts some magical Creatures can not eat human food so they eat that instead. You magically absorb it so there is no waste. And it is 10 times more flavorful than human food.

@Darkblossom group

I have a world of magic cats called Spirit Kats, and you know what they eat? Fruit. They eat blue fruit spotted with magenta, called kallisot fruit. They make most of the other stuff they eat with it to. The trees it comes from have green trunks that look like it’s just a really thick stem, and magenta leaves.

Verte is a small animal that is usually hunted for food, only the richest eat this meat.
Lenava is a juicy fruit that tastes like starbursts.

Deleted user

Yeah, Verte is commonly prepared with a gravy that is made from sauced Levana.

In my world, there's a certain type of drink, Corrumpere, with literally translates to "corrupt". To Ghouls, it's like alcohol mixed with some seriously potent energy shots. It's a deep black, however, with a red glow.
To humans. it's super dangerous and will kill anybody who drinks enough, which isn't even that much. You could compare it to concentrated drugs.

Fantabulous

@standingondesks Know-it-all

One of my species is oviparous and they eat their own eggs whenever they aren't down for raising a(nother) kid. Different cultures have different and very strong opinions on how they are prepared correctly.

@Yamatsu

So wait, are there people (possibly females, though they could be seahorses for all I know) that act like chickens and lay eggs specifically for consumption? Are they like chickens in the fact that the eggs have to be fertilized outside of the body for them to hatch? Are there people who do that South American delicacy thing where they eat the fetus inside the egg raw?!

@standingondesks Know-it-all

Nah, usually everyone eats just their own eggs/prepares an egg dish for their own family and/or neighbours. They generally raise just about 2 children in a lifetime in modern day, so beyond that there's plenty of eggs to go around without having to make a specific effort.

Wait, where did you hear chicken eggs have to be fertilized outside the body? That seems… odd? Is that even possible in amniote eggs, shell and all?? Shrimpgoat eggs are just fertilized inside the body, but yeah they have to be fertilized to hatch. (The really freaky part is that chicken eggs don't even have to be fertilized to hatch -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parthenogenesis#Birds Someone should have told Michael Critchton before he wrote Jurassic Park, then those poor monstrosities needn't have gotten frog DNA for no good reason lol)

I… never heard about that o.O I always imagined they'd just put them in the fridge/prepare them right after laying so the embryo wouldn't develop. But I'll think about it… though it does have interesting moral implications to be sure…

(Also just in case you didn't know, female seahorses are the ones that do the egg-laying, the males just have a brood pouch they are laid into and hatch in. Producing eggs a.k.a. comparatively large immobile sex cells is a basic definition of biologically female so if it weren't so… well.)

@Yamatsu

Thank you for clearing up my misconceptions! If anything, now it seems convenient to be able to produce your own food rather than having to go purchase it. Now that you mention it, however, have there been cases where the eggs hatch without being fertilized like those chickens?

@Althalosian-is-the-father book

I have this thing that I may or may not keep. They're called Bayon trees and they have something like coconuts (they are about a foot in diameter) except they are all edible except for a some what thin outer layer like a peel. The peel is about 1/3 cm thick and is a bit like leather. The fruit just underneath is what you would expect breadfruit to be like if you didn't know what breadfruit was. (A little dry and tough, but filling and nutritional.)
Then there is the nut which is about nine inches diameter and wood. when that is broken open there are three layers. There is a nutty, chalky layer about a centimeter thick. It can be made into a kind of flour if ground. After that if a fruity layer, the consistency of peach flesh. Very soft and juicy. further in is a hollow the size of a baseball that's just full of juice.

@lemon-gummy group

Mine is a cake bun, like a dumpling or a pot-sticker made of cake :) it comes in generic cake flavors with an edible flower on top. About the size of someone's palm + fingers
