So, I have this friend. She’s awesome, friendly, and hilarious. I absolutely love her from the bottom of my heart. But I never see her IRL, so we text each other. I asked her, “Do you ever randomly think about things that you regret?” I asked that super casually, and she responded with, “Every day. It makes me want to do…stuff…” and she said some other stuff after that, I forget. I genuinely love and care about her, so I asked, “Do what?…suicide?” She sent me 3 little dots and asked if we could stop talking about it. So, my best friend thinks about killing herself every day of her life? Plus, we’re both Christians, she’s in 8th grade, I’m in 7th, and my problem is, I don’t know how to re-address it through text. She doesn’t want to talk about it, but if she’s in some sort of danger…I just want to know how to casually bring it up through a texting conversation, or even in a normal conversation. We might see each other this Sunday, but I’m not sure when. Anyway, I don’t want to pry. I need her to know how much I love her, how much I’m with her through this, and how she needs to tell me if she’s in danger. I’m a year younger than she is, if you didn’t quite gather that :)
You might just need to be direct… If she persists with being vague then try to comfort her…
Yeah…
I ask her how she's doing, if she's doing OK, and she just says she's fine, but school sucks.
Can I have a way to casually bring it up?
thanks :)
Maybe try to relate the issue to something in your personal life?
Oh man this is such a tough problem, I’ve been in a similar situation myself
Just.. ask how her week was. Then bring up that night. “So, about [insert day of week]”
There isn’t really an easy way to do it that I know of, but if things get words call for help immediately
My mom’s usually home, so I would have to wait until she leaves to call a helpline. And I can’t tell my mom. She tells her friends everything, whether I want her to or not.
Oh…
You'll have to do it yourself then
That's all I got, Fuzzy… Sorry, my nerves are terrible…
it's fine
are you okay, Shuri?
(you can talk about your problems, too. everyone has problems in their life. :)
It's not my problems, so no, I can't talk about them… But yeah, I'm fine…
bump
im still super scared and i need help i really appreciate everyone's help thank you but i need as much help as possible also the internet (not counting notebook) is useless and doesnt help
Talk to them about other things and try to see if there's anything abnormal
Just do your best to stay calm
Freaking out all over them and being super in their face is not going to help
Don’t pressure them, they technically don’t have an obligation to tell you anything, but just be there for them until they’re ready to open up
Thank you, that was a good point.
I don't really know how to go about it, though, because I feel like she'll clam up when I text her about it, you know?
They are most likely to get mad at you if you go beserk all over them, believe me, I know from experience. Just keep cool around them, don’t make it out to be a big deal, wait until they are ready to open up. Keep it quiet, don’t tell a lot of people, or anyone who doesn’t absolutely need to know
Just talk about non-suicide related things first
That's also very true… I can confirm that as well…
Thank you, that was a good point.

So don’t text her about it, don’t push her. Just.. first of all keep in mind that I’m not a professional. What id do in this situation is sort of gently check in on her every now and then in a casual way

Coming from me, you're pretty good, Topaz…
