Just a discussion/ rant. I hate the Oscars, especially as a fan of animation. Tonight I decided to watch a bit of it only to be predictably disappointed with both the nominees and the winners. Wanna know what was nominated for best animated feature?
-Coco
-The Boss Baby
-Ferdinand
-Loving Vincent
-The Breadwinner
First, I'd like to point out the obvious: Ferdinand and The Boss Baby. Just… WHY? No offense if you liked those movies, but they're far from Oscar-worthy, especially considering what other ground-breaking and great animated films could have been on the list. Like, Captain Underpants (yes, I know not all of you will agree with me that it should have been nominated, but as someone who grew up reading the books I was extremely happy to see that the film maintained the style of the books and managed to be so funny… most of the time), or The Lego Batman Movie (It's horrible how they've managed to snuff TWO good lego movies so far!), and Your Name (SERIOUSLY?! It was critically acclaimed and went on to be the highest grossing animated movie in Japan! That takes some serious strength!). Care to know who won? Drum roll pl- it was Coco. We all saw it coming. Every fucking year it's Pixar. Always. And if Pixar didn't release anything that year then they'll nominate Disney. I remember watching the Oscars one year and two of the nominees for best animated feature were Brave and Wreck-It-Ralph. A Pixar movie and a Disney movie. A lot of people seem to agree that Wreck-It-Ralph was a better movie. Which was why I hated to see Brave take the award. Honestly, I don't care for Brave, no offense. I thought Wreck-It-Ralph was superior in almost every way imaginable. Also, I hated how politically correct they were this year. They said a bunch of bullshit along the lines of "Oh, those straight white males! We need more diversity~!". I like to see diversity in media, but never like this. They treat being gay like they just cured world hunger. (That's exaggerating it a bit, but you get my point) Honestly, who cares what sexuality or race you are?! We're all on a (mostly) equal playing field.
Anyways, this ends my rant. What are your thoughts on the Oscars and how they treat animation? Let me know in the comments!

@Hey_Its_Snowy_And_Im_Generally_Confused

Wow, I watched all of the Oscars last night and though I don’t have as strong of an opinion as you, I’ve seen Ferdinand and The Boss Baby, and they were pretty mediocre. They’re sort of like the Bee Movie or Shark Tale, like people know them but they aren’t really Oscar worthy.

I agree with you. I thought that the nominees weren’t really that good. Coco was great though and I’m glad it won. Besides Coco, I think they didn’t choose very good nominees.

@MidnightWarrior13 I've heard excellent things about Loving Vincent and The Breadwinner

@MidnightWarrior13 Also, what do they mean by best animated feature? Do they mean the movie with the best animation? Or best animated movie? It's really confusing

@Masterkey

I AGREE WITH YA

When my mom said, "The Oscars are on tonight" I responded with "who even cares about them?" She was like, "Yeah, it's pretty terrible." It's the same old thing for every award ceremony: super rich people patting each other on the backs and pretending to care about the common man's problems, pretending to be judging "art" when it's really all a money-making business. They throw around buzz words like "racism" and "sexism" and "homophobia" and they get all emotional and it's just BLAH. They don't really care. The most hilarious one was when during the Emmys this year (I think, I don't know this stuff really), a ton of people gave a bunch of "moving" speeches about equality, and then only one woman won anything the entire night. I don't really look for half men and half women winning an award for everything, it's fine if more men made better stuff one year or vice versa (as if the judges are even fair, though). It's just that the way they went about it was hypocrisy at its finest.

Not saying that NO celebrities care about important issues, but I get the impression that most of them use their "caring" for publicity, fame, and followers.

@snowflake_castiel I have nothing against Shape of Water, or the fact that it won. My problem mainly stems from the fact that other years it's some movie people have either never seen or never cared for. Most categories have the same few nominees and often times fails to select the few who actually deserved to win in their respective categories (for example, Suicide Squad winning the award for best makeup. wtf).
