Do you love figuring out something new? Have you ever been told you learn from your mistakes? Have you ever actually learned from your mistakes? If you answered yes, you may be interested in how people have learned from their mistakes and figured out something wonderful becuase of it! Mistakes are a key part of discovery. How else do you think Post-It-Notes jumped off the ground and became a best seller? How penicillin was found out?

To dive right in, penicillin, the drug that stops bacteria from growing, was found out from a careless mistake. In "The Discovery of Penicillin" (Source one), the author explained that "Alexander Fleming noticed a Petri dish containing a bacteria that had been mistakenly left open. Because of the accident, the dish was now contaminated by blue-green mold from an open window." To clarify, Alexander found the mold that had contaminated the bacteria had stopped the bacteria from growing. The author also wrote that "On the World War II battlefield, penicillin helped wounded soldiers fight fatal infections." In other words, this substance had helped injured soldiers keep fighting to protect our country and us from danger. Critics argue that penicillin is too unstable to use, but in reality, it helps many people fight infections and other things that put their life at risk.

On to another mistake that lead to a adhesive becoming a popular office supply. Why, Sticky notes of course! In 1968, Spencer Silver, a chemist who was researching a way to make bigger and better adhesives, came up with "Microspheres, which kept their stickiness and had a 'Removability characteristic,' allowing attached surfaces to be peeled apart easily." In other words, while trying to come up with a new adhesive, Silver came up with a supply that would be soon a must have across the country. You're probably saying "How does this count as a mistake?" Well, that was not the mistake, this was. "During his Wednesday choir practice, Fry would bookmark his hymnbook with pieces of paper, but by Sunday morning they would have fallen out." The author suggests that Fry used the microspheres with his papers as bookmarks, then, post it notes started to take off.

In conclusion, mistakes can and have led to scientific discoveries that have changed our world for the better. If we understand this, then we can learn from our own mistakes and help our world.

Fun fact: Rubber and microwaves also came from mistakes, and I think X-ray machines did too

I know microwaves did, I just didn't feel like writing about it.

@ravens

James' singing voice is πŸ‘Œ

Honestly what makes it even better is he is genuinely terrible at singing. And yet people love him all the more for being who he is.
