I'm a horrible person haha, my characters go through SO much, and I am such an addict of sad/bittersweet moments and scenes. What's some of your favorite melancholy moments that you have either read or have written?

@German_Boats

If you've ever read catching moon drops, ( the last in a trilogy by Jennifer Erin Valet,) I love the scene in the end when she's crying in the gazebo. Or, in The Gathering, ( another last book of a trilogy,) When the boy she loves gives his life for her. Or in Wonder where the dog dies!

i think one of my favourite sad moments that i've written is SPOILER ALERT when i killed nova halfway through the first novel. she's dying and elowen's crying, saying it'll be alright, but it really won't, and nova sees home and she's so ready to just die and give up, it's all really sad.

I really feel bad for my characters, I haven't killed anyone permanently off yet but they all have so much psychological trauma at this point. So one of the saddest scenes I've probably written is where one of my characters, Catherine (who was roughly like 6 at the time), is in the process of being experimented on by the main antagonist and her DNA gets majorly screwed up and results in her dying painfully in front of her siblings. Her oldest brother is screaming trying to get to her despite being in an unbreakable glass cell, her older sister is crying hysterically, and her other brother (who is one of the main narrators) is just there silently in shock as everything just slows around him and all the noise slowly gets tuned out as he watches his youngest sister die. (however she is revived from dying later, but has to live with a lot of physical and mental troubles due to this event. And honestly this event messed up all the siblings God rest their poor souls)

My saddest scene that I’ve written was probably when Johanna died (both times). She died at first at the hands of one of her dearest friends. He only realized his mistakes after it was far too late, and she was dead. He then basically had to raise her children, even though they hated him. It served as a constant reminder that he could never reverse what he had done to Jo, or any of her other friends that he killed. When Ben (the guy that killed Jo) jumped timelines, he was ecstatic to see her again. She had no idea of anything that had happened, but she was happy to reunite with him, as he had died (in a different manner) in her timeline. However, she got sick soon after and died again, leading him to publish her diaries and take up the role of President in her name. I definitely put these two through a lot, but I love them to death (pun not intended) and they’ll always be the best pair of friends in anything I’ve written!

One of the saddest scenes I've read is in A Dog's Purpose. The end kills me inside, but then there's also when the main character dies as Bailey, at the Vet's? That made me cry an embarrassing amount. There's also a really sad bit at the end of The Other Side of the Mountain, the sequel to My Side of the Mountain, when SPOILER ALERT the main character has the chance to get his bird back—what was her name, Frightly?—and instead he just lets her fly away and be free. That also made me cry, and at the time I was sitting in a cafe so that was a tad mortifying.

Saddest moment I’ve written? Either the car crash that kills Jasper in Geneva Weston’s story, Carrie getting cursed and not being able to save her BFF, or Jon killing his girlfriend’s sister. All time saddest I’ve written is Therese’s crush/best friend dying in her arms after using all of her remaining strength to save Therese.
Saddest I’ve read? Thorne stabbing Cress in TLC. Messes me up every time, as does the death of my boy Finnick Odair. But the last jedi’s scene with Mark and Carrie where Mark says “no one is ever really gone” made me bawl

@Masterkey

Saddest I've read: hMMMMMmmmm……… I cried when Mathew Cuthbert died in Anne of GG, and I ALMOST cried when Harry was super depressed at the end of TOOTP after Sirius' death. I think the most I ever cried during a book was The Return of the King ( and it wasn't just one spot. It was all over). I'm sure there are others where I cried even more but I can't think of it.

I don't kill a lot of characters, but, when I do, I make sure it's completely devastating. That way, it tears me apart, punishing me for what I've put the character through… For what I put the readers through…

So, I'd say every death scene I've written every.

@Mere

I don't know why, but I never cry when reading… If I had to recall a time I'd say I was devastated when Old Dan died in Where the Red Fern Grows, but I didn't cry (mainly cause we read it in my classroom in the fifth grade) and when Bianca Di Angelo dies in Percy Jachson because I adored her and Nico, but this was spoiled before hand so I saw it coming.
