Limit all your sugar to as close to zero as you can get
No white bread
eat lots of vegetables and fruit
Meat! Not like fried chicken and ribs and junk like that. More like chicken breasts, fish (salmon, halibut), etc.
Most people think limiting yourself to like 2 meals a day is good. No, do not do that! My mom eats 6 meals a day and follows her eating plan. She started like 3-ish months ago and has already lost like 20 lbs

When you trying to make a shift to a healthier lifestyle, it's very important to not immediately go cold turkey on a diet right away. That takes an immense amount of determination, and as soon as you stop, it is very easy to snap right back into your old habits.
Honestly, I would start by looking at what you eat on a daily basis and become aware of it. If you can, start a food journal and write down everything you eat for about a week. Then, look at what you wrote, and see if you notice any patterns.
After that, you should begin to weed away the bad foods in your diet and replace them with something better.
There is no "holy grail" of diets, as we all are slightly different and require different amounts of certain nutrients, but there are a few things you work on. Just start with what is easiest for you, and go from there.
(btw my mom is a licensed nutritionist)
@Celestial-B made a lot of good points, but to add on,
limiting sugar can be really difficult at first. Typically, the most common place for people to overload their sugar intake is through sugared drinks(soda, juice, sweetened coffees, etc.) If you can start by limiting those, that's already a step in the right direction.
Beyond white bread, you should avoid processed foods as much as you can. From white bread, to cookies, to instant ramen, to lunchables, most of that stuff if full of chemicals that the human body really isn't made to handle. A good rule to follow when you are at the grocery store is "If my grandma couldn't pronounce it, try to avoid it."
However, I do have to disagree on the topic of meal times. We all have different metabolisms; when you eat and how much you should eat all depends on you.
I could ramble for a really long time about all sorts of things in nutrition, so if you have any specific questions, let me know.
and remember, START SMALL!! DON'T TRY TO CHANGE EVERYTHING AT ONCE!!

I'm a vegan bc of health issues and the biggest thing that helped me when cutting basically everything out of my diet was MAKE SMOOTHIES. Lots of fruits and vegetables (kale is good with almost any fruit, fr), almond milk, and frozen bananas is super good. Also, drink tons of water. I usually drink mine with cucumber and lemon. Avoid processed foods.

@Masterkey

What everybody said above is great.

In my experience, I think a lot of it has to do with portion size, too. I ate "healthily" but would stuff myself, and I saw no progress unless I exercised a TON (which isn't good either). Eat until you're satisfied, not until you're full (it'll take awhile to get in tune with your body in that way, but you'll figure it out if you decide to pay attention at every meal. Don't be discouraged if you overeat, it's not the end of the world). In the end you'll actually feel more energized and in tune with what your body needs when! Some days you need a lot, some days you need a little, it's not black and white every day.

It's not about calories, either. Don't listen to the articles that tell you to care about them. Honestly, counting calories should be used if you're trying to gain weight maybe, but it doesn't generally matter when you're trying to lose it.

And then it depends on your body! Some people need their meals perfectly balanced, some people need more meat, some people need more dairy, some people need more veggies, etc. One diet doesn't fit all, and it takes some work to figure out what you need. But you will of you just try out different foods and see how you feel. After almost two years, I've figured out: I'm kind of allergic to sugar (it always made me CRAZY when I was little, too), I do really well on freshwater fish and dairy, and I need a balance between meat and vegetables and fruit (unless I eat a lot of chicken for some reason… it makes me feel blah). My mom does really well on hearty grains and meat and vegetables. It really just depends.

Good luck! Don't get too worked up about it, living a healthy lifestyle is far easier than all the dieters online trying to sell you something make it seem. Once you can read your body and get rid of processed foods and chemicals, you'll feel great and know what you need!
