"I trust that you need to go to sleep." She replied, not missing the yawn.
“Can’t you allow me to stay up and flatter you? Besides, we haven’t even eaten dinner yet.” Damian protested.
"Fine, eat and then get some rest." Catori ignored his first comment, and the warm feeling in her chest it brought about.
Damian smiled in victory, his icy eyes gleaming with triumph. “So, Sparrow?” The prince paused, thinking to himself for a moment. He had grown up in libraries and read all sorts of books. And maybe a romance novel or two had slipped into the mix. Needless to say, Damian was basing a lot of his actions of the few that he had read. “Ask me anything. Might as well, while we wait.”
Catori paused. Anything? She had no clue what to even ask, and took a minute to think. "Um…what's your favorite childhood memory?"
A small smile spread onto Damian’s face, a memory coming to mind. “On one of my father’s less serious diplomatic trips, he took all of us along with him. Victor set fire to my bed and I ended up storming outside during a lightning storm, which was likely Fletcher’s doing now that I think of it. I fled to the stables and spent the night learning my first curse words with a rather rowdy group of horses and a few foul mouthed barn mice. My father was… shocked, to say the least.”
Catori snickered, covering her mouth with her hand. "They pick that up from soldiers coming through?"
Damian nodded in amusement, chuckling lightly. “What’s your favorite one?”
Catori's eyes lit up, a tad bit evilly. "It was the time the Duke of Ryln came to stay with us. The twin's and I snuck in and took all of his clothing while was in the bathing chamber, and strung them up in the courtyard."
Damian burst into a laugh. “That’s cruel of you.” He shook his head, trying and failing to disapprove.
"I was placed on lockdown for two weeks, but it was absolutely worth it. He was such a-" She thought for a second. "-vile old man."
“I have no doubt that he deserved it.” Damian smirked. “You’re quite brave for doing that.”
Catori tilted her head, confused. "Brave? How do you figure?"
“It takes bravery to do something that bold.” He laughed. “I’ll be sure to never irritate you.”
"The real bold thing would have to be lying to my parents about the twin's involvement. They had dates in town with some civilians, and offered their dessert for the duration of my lockdown." Catori laughed, brushing her hair back from her face.
Damian’s laughter faded into a fond smile. “So you’re certainly loyal.” He noted, being more honest than he expected himself to be.
Catori shrugged. "Yes, I am. To anyone I've judged worthy of it. You've been placed on that list, by the way."
“Is that because you’re marrying me?” Damian tried not to get his hopes up about what being worthy meant.
"No, it's because I decided you're a decent person." Catori stated, meeting Damian's gaze. "There's a bit more, but most of that is loose and not very…easy to put into words."
“Could you try?” Damian asked quietly, his attention fixed on Catori’s hypnotic amber eyes.
She thought for a second, and nodded. "I guess…there's something safe about you? Just, comforting, if that makes sense?"
Damian was caught off guard by this. “Safe?” He repeated numbly, as if the word confused him a bit. “I find you quite comforting as well.” He had yet to tear his gaze away from her eyes, mesmerized by the color.
"O-oh.." Catori stuttered out, biting her lip. She had expected an entirely different reaction, but she couldn't say she'd rather a different one.
“I enjoy your company quite a bit. I expected a princess who despised me as much as my brothers do.” Damian finally ripped his gaze away, training his eyes on the ground.
