Would anyone here be interested in a Naruto universe roleplay? You don't have to have extensive knowledge or love of the animes to participate. If you have questions and/or are unsure about something, I don't mind helping you.

I don't mean to come across as desperate, but I'm really anticipating this. It's my first roleplay here on Notebook (although I've been roleplaying for about five years in total), so I'm hoping to see some interest!

On that note, hello everyone! I'm Remmy, aka Rem for short. It's nice to meet ya! ^^

EDIT: Since I think a lot of people are maybe scared away by the fact that they don't know very much about the animes, despite what I said about not needing extensive knowledge to join, I'd just like to clarify that if you know absolutely nothing about the animes but are still somewhat interested, I can give you a super-simplified explanation of the basics so that you can still join. Hopefully, this encourages some of you!

For clarification, the storyline would follow a team of four in the Hidden Leaf Village. My character would play the sensei of the group, and I'm looking for three genin of varying skill sets to fit into this team. That being said, I'm not intending on being super strict with it or anything.

Rules, Tidbits, Character Chart & Example!

Rules:

  • No unnecessary cussing. Obviously, if your character is injured or something less than ideal happens, it's totally appropriate for them to cuss, but please don't be that one off-the-rails person who cusses at everything.
  • Be kind to others. If you have constructive criticism, ask the permission of the person before saying anything. As for me, I'll take constructive criticism if you have some for me.
  • Obviously no godmoding where you control the actions of the plot or other people's characters exclusively by yourself. If you'd like the story to go in a certain direction, just ask if the others agree with you or not.
  • Since this roleplay would include multiple action scenes, make sure you have the consent of the character's owner before fatally harming that character. Note that no character will die in this roleplay unless you want them to for some unknown reason.
  • Keep your characters lowkey realistic. I say lowkey 'cause it's an anime, but please don't give them any unrealistic powers or anything. Keep in mind they're ninja, so they'll be able to do some pretty kick-butt stuff without those. I'll be pretty lenient with this stuff, so if you want to try creating a character with something like this, just run it by me. I'll really only say no if it interferes with the story in any way.
  • LGBT+ is 100% allowed.

Tidbits:

  • Set in the time period where Naruto leaves the village to train with Jiraiya. Note that interaction with any main characters from the anime will be limited to a degree.
  • Depending on how much you know about that anime (it doesn't need to be very much to participate—I could give you a simplified rundown of what you need to know if you don't know anything and still want to join), certain things, like the past of my character, will make just a tiny bit more sense.
  • This section is subject to change as time goes on.

Name: Naoki Yakushi
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Bisexual
Age: Nineteen
Backstory: Born in a small town on the outskirts of the Land of Fire. The population was small, barely fifty people in total, so it wasn't a huge surprise when the place became collateral due to a raiding party of shinobi. There were few survivors, Naoki's mother one of them. Before he knew it, he, as a young child, was being dropped off at an orphanage run by a lady known as Nono Yakushi, an effort from his mother to protect him. He never saw her again. Years passed and kids passed in and out of the orphanage until one boy in particular, newly named Kabuto, arrived. The two became close friends fast, able to bond over the closeness in age. More time passed until a man named Danzo took an interest in the orphanage, prompting him to blackmail Nono in an attempt to recruit a new member for Root. Kabuto, having eavesdropped on the conversation, promptly volunteered in an effort to save the orphanage, and Naoki, not wanting to lose such a close friend, volunteered with him. Both children went with Danzo and trained in the Foundation as spies. Something happened to Kabuto a couple of years later, however. Something Naoki never quite figured out. Regardless, the 'something' resulted in the sudden disappearance of his best friend, leaving him alone under Danzo's rule until the day that Tsunade returned to the village to become hokage. After a…slip up on Naoki's part, Tsunade became aware of his existence and insisted he transfer to the black ops under her command. Danzo begrudgingly agreed, hoping to use Naoki as a way to gather intel on the new hokage. Unfortunately for him, he misunderstood where Naoki's loyalties lie, leading to the eventual abandonment of Root, although the seal on his tongue to prevent the spilling of any of the Foundation's secrets still remains. Yet more time passed before Tsunade decided to entrust Naoki with a team of genin whose previous sensei had suddenly retired, claiming he was ready to become a more crucial member of society there in the Hidden Leaf Village.
Appearance: He's of an average height of around 5"10 and weighs barely 150 lbs. He's lithe and thin, build more for speed and agility than power, with short, unruly silverish hair that has a small braid through the left side. He has relatively plain gray eyes that, to anyone else, are full of shocking maturity for someone his age. As for identifiable features, he has a large shimmery patch of scar tissue all along the outside of his left forearm, from his elbow to just below his wrist in length. The scar was a result of his attempt to shield himself from an active paper bomb, which, in part, worked. He also has the anbu symbol tattooed on the same arm on his shoulder, although this, along with the scar, is usually hidden by his clothes. His everyday attire is a simple black long sleeve shirt and the standard-issue jonin pants, which are also black. His headband is looped around his shoulder, and he has bandages around his right leg for both support and easy access to his weapons pouch. His sandals are also black. When he's on duty, this outfit is accompanied by a modified version of the flak jacket that is much lighter and easy to maneuver in than the original, as well as a holster on his back for the tanto (short sword) that he became accustomed to during his time in Root. When the situation calls for it, he still has his anbu black ops gear hidden away in a box under his bed, including a mask that has an uncanny resemblance to a weasel (an indication of his time as a spy, which other members of the black ops can't seem to forgive).
Rank: Special Jonin, ex-member of the Foundation/Root, sleeper agent of the anbu black ops working under Lady Tsunade
Weapons: Tanto (short sword), senbon (needles), chakra scalpel, shuriken, kunai, paper bombs, etc.
Other: His fighting style is near identical to Kabuto Yakushi's at times, as they both learned originally from Nono Yakushi, and then from Danzo in the foundation. In other words, Naoki excels in hand-to-hand combat and medical ninjutsu, has ridiculously high chakra reserves and heals quicker than the average shinobi. He also has mastery over three of the chakra styles, those being earth, water and fire. From there, however, things differ. Kabuto went on to learn from Orochimaru, whereas Naoki trained under Tsunade. Their styles reflect those decisions endlessly.

Note that you do not, in any way shape or form, have to put that much effort or thought into a character in order to participate in this. I believe that a character will only truly be fleshed out after being written into an actual storyline. Annnnddd I may have gotten a bit carried away. Also please don't let it scare you away if you don't understand much about Naoki or his past. I basically fit him into the actual plot of Naruto, but I will say, again, that you do not need to know much about the anime to participate! I swear. Also don't let the big blocks of text scare you away, either…

(I'm not sure how else to attract people to this roleplay, so I'm just going to post a starter to see if that works. If not, feel free to just enjoy reading it. I might just turn this into a fanfic in all honesty.)

"Your mission, should you choose to accept it."

Naoki's glanced at the document in her hand, then back to Tsunade's face. With a nearly imperceptible nod, he took it.

The jonin's eyebrows knitted together in confusion as he read the information he was presented. "The Land of Iron, milady? I was under the impression the samurai wanted nothing to do with us."

The fifth Hokage let out a sigh and leaned back in her chair tiredly. "As was I. It seems, however, that this is an issue they are unable to resolve on their own."

Naoki hummed in thought, refocusing on the page. "These disappearances," he began hesitantly, rubbing his neck out of habit. "They're reported to be most common along the eastern border, correct?"

Tsunade recognized the stir in his eyes and straightened her posture, leaning forward and resting her elbows on the table with clasped hands. "Yes, they are."

There was a beat of silence in the Hokage's office. Naoki seemed to be struggling with something.

Finally, under the watchful eyes of his Hokage, he bowed his head. His hand fell from the back of his neck, trembling until he closed it into a fist. To an outsider, it was a sign of acceptance towards the mission, but to the both of them, is was resignation and the silent promise that Naoki would focus solely on the mission at hand. "Very well, Lady Tsunade. I will depart this evening…if that is all?"

She held his gaze for a moment, then smiled knowingly. "Just one more thing," she said, a hint of amusement in her tone.

Naoki tilted his head questioningly.

"You'll be taking those three."

The jonin frowned. "Those three?"

"Is there something wrong?"

Naoki hesitated, then shook his head. "No, of course not, milady. It's just…"

Tsunade looked at him blankly, and he swallowed.

"It's just… This seems a little tough for three genin to handle. The caliber of the mission is…unlike anything else they've ever been assigned," he tried to explain. Not to mention the danger if those we suspect are behind this.

"Are you doubting your team, Naoki?" the Hokage demanded, making the jonin flinch with guilt. More softly, she continued. "The mission is reconnaissance—low risk. As long as you work together and lay low, there should be no problems. In the event of an enemy, I have faith in your ability to keep your team safe and vice versa… Unless the doubt lies in me?" she asked, her voice turning sharp again.

"Never, Lady Tsunade," he answered, rolling the document into a tight cylinder and tucking it into the pouch at his thigh. "We will depart this evening."

"Very well. You're dismissed. I look forward to reading your report." It was clear in her body language that the Hokage was satisfied, bringing a small smile to Naoki's lips. With a nod and another bow, he was gone.

Yes, of course! Please and thank you to all of you! And no problem, @Larkspur! I'll give you a super basic rundown of things you need to know to create a character, and then just a few other helpful things concerning terms and where we are in the plot and such.

Names and/or Clans
Names in Japanese, please! Honorifics really only apply to Naoki, his being "sensei". If you want to refer to other characters with -san, -kun or -chan, that's up to you!

As for Clans, the most notable in the Hidden Leaf Village (hometown of our characters) are the Inuzuka (ninja hound owners), Aburame (think living insect hives), Akimichi (turn calories into extra chakra; known for power and being more heavy set), Yamanaka (manipulation of the mind, mind/body control) and Nara (shadow manipulators). You don't have to create a character from any one of these, but in case you do, they're the strongest. I'm not counting Uchiha (the clan Sasuke's from, wielder's of an ocular jutsu known as Sharingan) 'cause they were massacred and it would clash too much with the original plot.

This aside, you're totally fine to create your character without them belonging to a clan, or even make up a clan if you want!

Chakra Natures
Most every ninja has an affinity with at least one chakra nature out of the five basics, and since your character will be a genin, it's incredibly, incredibly unlikely they'll have complete mastery, but they may know up to two.

Fire –> Strong against Wind, weak against Water.
Wind –> Strong against Lightning, weak against Fire.
Lightning –> Strong against Earth, weak against Wind.
Earth –> Strong against Water, weak against Lightning.
Water –> Strong against Fire, weak against Earth.

If a ninja is born with an affinity to two or more chakra natures, that is called an elemental bloodline. It's kinda complicated so I won't go into it, but it's possible for a ninja to master multiple chakra natures even without an affinity to it. Only those with an elemental bloodline or incredibly extensive training can combine those natures (i.e. water and wind equals ice, water and earth equals mud, etc.).

This won't have much significance in character creation, but it's good to know for action scenes down the line.

Basics of Jutsu
Three basic techniques: Ninjutsu, genjutsu and taijutsu.

Ninjutsu typically refers to elemental attacks, i.e. fireball jutsu is releasing a giant fireball from the mouth through chakra manipulation and hand seals/signs, or water dragon jutsu shapes any nearby water into a dragon and attacks, but it's kind of a blanket term for all attacks or strategies that can't be achieved through conventional means, i.e. clone jutsu or substitution. Or, more simply put, anything that isn't genjutsu or taijutsu.

Genjutsu is the casting of illusions that feel real, and these illusions can vary from large-scale realistic reshaping of the world, to altering minor things to keep a person lost in the woods. Under the influence of genjutsu, the person in question would be at the mercy of the castor unless they broke out using a kind of jutsu, often punctuated with the word "release". They can be cast via your senses, and all of the senses are affected.

Taijutsu is much more simple to explain, since it's mostly simple hand-to-hand combat. I would elaborate, but I promised to keep it simple, and it won't really be all that necessary for the roleplay.

Terms and Need-To-Knows (I'm sure you know some of these already, but I wanna make sure I'm thorough!)

  • Hokage = Leader of the village
  • Anbu Black Ops = A group of elite ninja that are loyal to the Hokage. Identities are protected.
  • The Foundation / Root = A subdivision of the Anbu who only obey Danzo Shimura. Dedicated to protecting the Leaf Village from the shadows, meaning they're unafraid to get their hands dirty. Identities are protected.
  • Chakra = Energy that allows a person to perform jutsu.
  • Shinobi = Ninja
  • Genin = Lowest ranked ninja; oftentimes beginners.
  • Chinin = The rank right after genin belonging to more advanced ninja.
  • Jonin/Jounin = The rank after chunin belonging to an advanced ninja. Most jonin have control over three chakra natures.
  • Special Jonin/Jounin = A jonin that specializes in one specific area.
  • B.I.N.G.O. Book = Books compiled, typically by the hidden villages but not exclusively, of dangerous ninja from rival villages, missing-nin (ninja who abandoned their village), and/or potential security threats. In these books include every known fact about the ninja in question, as well as a bounty for their capture or death.
  • The Hidden Sound Village = Orochimaru (evil bad snake man who likes to bite people) has many hideouts here, and it's where his followers (coughocugh experiments) dwell. Less of a village and more of a network of laboratories and other hideouts.
  • The Land of Iron = Shares a border with the Land of Fire (home of the Hidden Leaf Village) and the Land of Sound (Hidden Sound Village). Samurai dwell here, and they have an agreement with the ninja to leave each other alone. Because of how neutral it is, meetings between the Kage (Hokage, Kazekage, Mizukage, etc. —all leaders of the five great shinobi nations) are often held there.

Storyline
This roleplay takes place at the same time that Naruto leaves with Jiraiya to train for two years. At this point Sasuke is with Orochimaru and has been for around a year. Sakura is undergoing training with Tsunade, and the rest of the supporting characters (Neji, Tenten, Lee, Kiba, Hinata, Shino, Choji, Shikamaru and Ino) are all participating in missions regularly.

Main characters may be mentioned at times, but aren't going to be focused on a whole lot, so there's no need to know everything about them.

Let me know if I missed something obvious? I'm honestly so exhausted that my eyes are blurring as I'm writing this, but this should hopefully clear some things up.

And if you have any questions, please, don't hesitate to ask!

I'm ecstatic that people want to join, and I'm really not hiding it well at all lol. So thank you thank you thank you again for wanting to join! It really means a lot! ^^ <3

(OMG THAT TOOK SO LONG DOES THIS EVEN MAKE SENSE?!)
Name: Benjiro Inuzuka
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Gay
Age: 14
Backstory: Benjiro was born into the Inuzuka clan. He had lived his whole life working every minute of every day so he could bring home money to his mother, father, and little sister. His family goes on the number one on his priority list. Next to that was mastering his genjutsu as well as his chakra natures fire and lightning. His mother knew more about lighting and fire chakra natures, while his father knew more about genjutsu. His father had told him that he has taught him all the skills he knows and that Mother was dying. They had to leave because if they didn't they would end up with some other family and his father didn't want that. His father had sent him off and out of the house with his sister, giving him only a few things. Clothes for both of them, twin katanas that he crafted himself, and an amulet that his mom wore. Benjiro gave it to his sister to keep safe, but she ended up dying while they were traveling to get some supplies, but he still kept the amulet. He finally found somewhere to call home in the Hidden Leaf Village.
Appearance: His height is 5’7 (average for his age, I looked it up XD), his hair is a faint red that stretches down to his knee. He ties his bangs in a braid that connects in the back of his head. His eyes are a dark blue that goes light around the edges of his eyes. He wears glasses. His clothes are given to him by his dad when he visits or sends him letters.
Rank: Genin
Weapons: Twin Katanas that his father made before he left his family with his sister. He only uses those when he's too beaten up and his senses stop being strong.
Other: He is very light on his feet and has a great sense of smell. Loves to eat more than anything and can be reckless.

Makes total sense! I love him!! Although dang, his backstory is sad…

The only issue is… The Akimichi are a clan that dwell in the Hidden Leaf, so it'd be kind of odd if he was born outside the village. Also, from his 'Other' description, he sounds a bit more like an Inuzuka (who pride themselves on their sense of smell, as it rivals those of the hounds they train). I'm just mentioning this because, on principle, those of the Akimichi clan are not very light on their feet. Their trademark jutsu typically lies in body expansion, which utilizes the disproportion of fat in their bodies to make their attacks more powerful, hence the whole power over speed thing. (Choji Akimichi of the Akimichi Clan) Just something to consider! If you want some more info on a specific clan, just let me know! I really only briefly summarized them before, but they each have a signature kind of jutsu.

It's not really all that big of a deal, though, and I'm alright with overlooking technicalities 'cause this is just meant to be for fun! ^^

Deleted user

Aw, don't worry! Again, it's not all that big of a deal, and it's not going to impact the roleplay negatively in any way. If you're dead set on changing something, I would recommend just changing his last name, since Benjiro is already an awesome character without having to belong to any one clan. It may just overcomplicate him, trying to fit him into one. That's up to you, though! Roleplaying with him will be interesting, regardless! :p

Deleted user

Thanks, and I did change the last name because you said he was more like that clan. Thanks for the tips! In the future just so you know My spelling skills are not the best so if I spell something wrong tell me please!"

Deleted user

It's no problem! And I feel as if I should've clarified a bit more, oops. Totally my fault for not elaborating.

Each of the clans I mentioned in the info post above are native to the Hidden Leaf, including the Inuzuka. It's true that Benjiro fits more into the Inuzuka clan than perhaps the Akimichi, but there's a few things you should know about that clan, first!

The Inuzuka clan is renowned for their cooperation jutsu with their canine pals (known as ninken, aka ninja hounds—note that these ninken cannot talk, unlike summonings, which are a whole other barrell of issues I'm not going to delve into right this second!). Also, many (but not all) have distinctive red fang markings on their cheeks. Their fighting style relies on their enhanced speed and agility, which is a result of their four-legged technique and other canine-based attacks. They're excellent trackers due to their sense of smell, and from the moment they get their ninja hound, the pair is inseparable. (Kiba Inuzuka and Akamaru of the Inuzuka Clan)

Long story short, there's still the same issue of Benjiro's birthplace, although the only thing he'd really need to fully belong to the Inuzuka clan is a ninja hound and the realization that he's gonna be using cooperation jutsu like Fang Over Fang, Man Beast Clone, etc.. (Let me know if you want more info on here!)

To restate what I said before, with hopefully some better context this time (again, totally my fault!), if you're dead set on changing something, I would recommend just changing his last name. It may be easier if he weren't part of a main clan in the Hidden Leaf, unless you want to change his past.

But I'll also say this again: it's not all that big of a deal, and it's not going to impact the roleplay negatively in any way. You don't have to change anything that you don't want to! ^^

Deleted user

Now to wait for the others… :3
I think I'm gonna make a new topic for the actual roleplay section, since this one has gotten kind of cluttered. This can be kind of an out of character thing where questions are answered and subplots explained further.

Deleted user

Er, Miko is a great character and all, but I do wonder if you read the joining info? The OCs in this roleplay are supposed to be genin that are ten to fourteen years of age, and it's set during the period in which Naruto leaves the village with Jiraiya to train for two years… Meaning Kakashi is alive, and only 26, 28 ish years old. In other words, if Miko were to be fourteen in this roleplay, Kakashi would've been 12, 14ish years old when he had her…

I'm fine with you using her if you modified her age, rank and surname, just for the purpose of this one roleplay, but otherwise, I'm honestly not sure how else to accept her.

Sorry if this came off as rude or blunt—that wasn't my intention! And Miko really does seem like an awesome character that I'd like to roleplay with sometime, if you ever feel up to it?

@V01DtheFae group

oh fair point so i will have to change that but her character profile will stay i will just tell what i am to change them to
Surname: Idenshi
age: 12-13
rank: Genin
