Hmmm I have a character named Oliver (Olli for short) on a separate roleplaying website, and i made his last name Bryson. You could use that if you wanted? There are surname generators out there, if you are still looking.

@icecubes

He's white, and he's sort of an assassin criminal type kid. it's a modern world so the last name would be pretty generic and from now

@icecubes

also i don't like the generators because i could spend years on it and not find a fitting last name, im super picky. This is like, my last resort. Also Bryson doesn't work for my character. Thank you though!

So I'm putting down names with their meanings
Germany:
Schneider (tailor)
Schulz (medieval she riff)
Klein (short/small)
Hoffmann (steward)
Lehmann (vassal)
Stein (rock)
Engel (angel)
Voigt (bailiff)

@Becfromthedead group

Denmark:
Hansen (from given name Hans)
Jensen (from given name Jens)
Olsen (from given name Ol/Ols/Ole)
Vestergaard ("the western farmstead")
And I couldn't find the meanings right away for these:
Holt
Lind
Moller
Nielsen
Ostergaard
Rigby

@icecubes

Oh shit that was a lot more than I expected, thank you! I'll definitely let you know which one I pick I just gotta test them out

@Becfromthedead group

Oh sweet! I actually really liked that one. I ended up just going through lists according to country and picking ones that I thought sounded good with Oliver, so for future reference, that's usually a good, somewhat fast way to go. Then you just write down ones that sound good until you have a decent sized list and pick. Glad I could help!

@icecubes

my issue is I'm quite indecisive which makes all the names sound bad but i looked up levin's meaning and it just clasked and i knew it was meant to be! the thing is I could get names for my other characters really easily

@Becfromthedead group

Yeah, I gotcha. Some characters are definitely easier than others. Heck, in my story, some were super easy the first time. Some of their names were changed pretty late in the game- like when I started my second draft.

@icecubes

Aw really? What's their name?
also I always feel obliged to never change their names because i chose them for a reason unless its like special circumstances

@Becfromthedead group

The guy is Niko Asphodel, and his sister's name is Elizah Asphodel.
And I chose Asphodel because Greek mythology and the fields of asphodel- a place where people who lived lives where they didn't truly do anything good go. It's sorta sketchy because he actually did some terrible things (but with good intentions/under orders). It also works because his backstory is that he cheated death a lot because he was in his nation's military, but was murdered in his sleep after returning home from the biggest, bloodiest war of the era. (The story kind of gets set in motion when he gets brought back to life with a very rare magic, and he doesn't know what to do with his second chance.)
And now that I think about it, it fits Elizah too because she's pretty morally gray, and while she tries to be good to people sometimes, she's a lot more self-interested.
As for the characters I changed late in the game, they were more side characters that I gave generic last names, but when I decided to give them a more fleshed-out personality and backstory, I gave them more colorful, interesting surnames.

@icecubes

I adore names from mythologies and such so much. One of my character's last name is Apate which is also from Greek mythology and Apate is the goddess of fraud and deception and my character basically seduces people and then proceeds to murder them.
And then our good Olliver boy, his alias is Anubis who is the god of the dead, and Olliver is also a killer.
alsooo your story sounds super interesting id read that
