So I love the idea of all my characters having some sort of metal or physical disability/disorder, but I don't want it to just be like depression, anxiety, or things most people already know and understand. Also, just to be clear, in no way do I want to just give a character a disability to be quirky or unique, I really want to show my readers what it's like to suffer from something without flat out saying "this person has anxeity". So idk if anyone has any ideas for literally anything that they would want to see more in characters, feel free to throw out literally anything!!

  • Ticks and/or stuttering
  • A twitchy eye
  • Their brain working faster than their tongue can talk, so the character sometimes say words that don't make sense because they all bundle together and they have to take a moment before being able to say properly

Those are the ones that jump to mind as I am very close to people with these disabilities

uh i recently wrote a character with bipolar disorder, that was really interesting to research and write about

i don't know exactly what you have in mind for physical things but i've done a character with albinism and another with vitiligo, those don't affect health as much as they affect appearance but

or maybe a character who's blind or hard of hearing?

That third one hits me hard. And sometimes (rarely) it comes with stuttering because I can't. get. the. frickin. words. out.

Yes. All of the characters I've created have either a mental or physical disability or disorder. My favourite character has bipolar disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and social anxiety. My other favourite character, Haru, has OCD, but more on the obsessive side. I gave him OCD after reading a book called 'Every Last Word', by Tamara Ireland Stone.
My character Saturo was abused continuously throughout life by his manipulative mother, giving him PTSD and a fear of shouting and sharp edges, oh and I can't forget that he freaks out every time he sees blood seeping out of any sized wound from his skin. He freezes in the spot and has a panic attack. To soothe pain, he'll repeatedly grasp him right arm and wrist with his nails until he can breathe normally or calmly. Afterwards he normally lays on his bed and cries for hours on end.
My character Windsong has depression, and she forces herself out of bed every morning because she knows she has to meet up to everybody's expectations otherwise they'll judge her and spread rumours about her.

I don't think I'm okay.

Yes! That's why I hate talking in class! I know what I want to say, I even go over it multiple times if I get a heads up on it, but when I talk, I still mess it up.

Me, who gave my character PTSD and depression (yes he has reasons for having the PTSD): Oh thank god I'm not the only one who tortures my OC's like this

@Fraust

I have a character who has really bad separation anxiety. He has an emotional support animal to help him with this, but he's never fully okay until the person comes back. Then he's just really clingy
