Easy. Write an idealist who has seen some cruel stuff. Who believes in the capacity of every human for great selflessness along with the greatest evil and knows that many choose closer to the latter.

You could also write the character to struggle a lot with how they see people. Like they want to expect the best and trust that people will do as they say, but at the same time, they expect the worst. That could lead to them always sending very mixed and contradictory signals to everyone around them, or to then often pushing decisions that require hope and trust off as far as they can because they don't want to deal with that struggle. Seeing as this character is an idealist, they will always (or most of the time) chose to try and believe in people, and chose to try and save the world or whatever positive option there is, but they will do it complaining and grumbling and with the most cynical attitude, as if the world is forcing them into this and they feel like it's a hopeless endeavour anyways. Pessimistic idealists from pop culture you could look up for further research would be (these are just people who fit this in my opinion, others might argue) Sirius Black from Harry Potter or watson from sherlock holmes (the version with benedict cumberbatch).
