The girl in front of him glared up at him, but for the first time in his life, he didn't shrink back from it. He didn't waver to her level, instead he held firm.
"Why," his voice echoed, emotionless, "Was I never good enough for you?"
The girl scoffed, opening her mouth to verbally cut him down but he cut her off.
"Did you ever love me?"
The girl looked thrown off by his question.
"What do you mean?"
Carlos felt his stoney exterior crack, "Did you ever love me? Or was I just your stepping stone to a better life?"
She huffed, clearly uncomfortable, "You're being dramatic."
"You were my whole world, Carmen! My only family! My twin sister! I would've done anything for you! Would've done anything to ensure you were safe. You took advantage of my love to get your way. You never stopped the bullying at school, you stood aside and let it happen. Yet at night you would wipe my tears as you helped me clean my wounds. Did you get some sick thrill out of hurting me like that? Of living a double life? And then you started to believe them! You started to believe my tormentors! You never had the courage to fight or at least TALK TO ME ABOUT ANYTHING!"
He was fully crying now, wiping his eyes as he kept his voice level.
"Why was I never good enough for you? Did you ever consider me your equal? Your better half? I just wanted to be loved, to be cared for. I wanted someone to care for me like I always took care of you. Was that too much to ask for?"
Carmen snapped, "You always play the victim. Always! God could you never take responsibility for yourself? You were never normal! Now we know why! You are just that. Just bad luck! And that's all you'll ever be!"
Carlos stopped, silent. Tense moments of silence passed the two of them. Carmen was slowly beginning to feel bad about what she had said when Carlos huffed.
"So I guess that answers that. I love you Carmen, but I guess it was never the same for you."
Carlos turned and walked out of Carmen's view where another girl waited for him. She held out her arms to him and caught him as he collapsed into sobs, feeling his heart shatter once more.
