Hey that sounds interesting! I am interested in science and that sort of thing, I think my least favorite subject is math, but yeah! Also yeah, every time I tell people I plan to be an animator they're like "Oh? Am I gonna see your name in the credits of a Disney Pixar movie in ten years?" and I'm like 'easy there tiger you're more ambitious for my career than I am' buT aLso yes! I did draw them all! Except for one; the one where Jean and his buddy Anubis are i think,,,pinky swearing? that was drawn by my friend, who owns the character Anubis!
that’s cool i’m not really an artist but i do try to draw sometimes but i’m really particular about details and things so i always HAVE to get the proportions exactly right and consistent with my description of the character,,but my skills aren’t that good. i used to draw more like anime-style but it was really hard to differentiate characters lmao so currently i think i’m trying semi-realism but i haven’t been drawing in a while. do you draw on paper first and then edit it digitally or do you just do it entirely digitally? i’m not really sure how i should do art so it’s easier/more convenient.
well i’m not actually really interested in maths i just apparently am better at those academically and i don’t really mind anyway but physics is fun sometimes
Hey man I'm a bit of a perfectionist too so I struggled with being satisfied with what I currently had (it helps to draw the character without clothes first, so you get the anatomy and proportions right, and then add the clothes.) Also I struggled with distinguishing my characters too but I started branching each one's designs so they grew more and more distinctive (I'm trying to be consistent with their outfits as well so that even that's distinctive with them.) Also, I do both! Digitally and traditionally. Sometimes what I want to draw is easier done on a skethbook than on a tablet, but if I want to color it, I use digital. There's a few pieces I've done in which I drew it on paper, took a pic of the drawing, imported it into the app, and then colored it, but kept the traditional line-art so it's both traditional and digital. I'd prefer to use digital if I want colors, because I have a ton of options for colors. I haven't quite found my style yet so I'm working on that, but I do like to just use every medium. (if I don't have paper, sometimes I'll doodle on my arms)
Yeah I do draw them without clothes first because clothes are extra difficult with the creases and textures and stuff. I feel like I do better with traditional drawing because my hands get shaky sometimes but it’s also troublesome since it’s so hard to erase specific things without ruining the rest of your work. I’ve been trying to do one drawing of a person every day(just a quick sketch in breaks/free periods) and I’m aiming to do this for a month lol hope it helps. I think my problem was with the features since even the slightest difference can make someone look completely different so it’s really hard to make these small details consistent.
Hi Zandra, I assume you do art, have you got any tips?
Oh yeah that'll definitely help. The best way to improve a skill is by practicing. Also I totally get you with the features, that's something I'm struggling with as well. Though, there's a few specific features of my characters that I have determined; one girl has a bit of a squishy face w noticeable cheeks, one girl has slick eyes, one guy has sharp proportions and a rectangular face, things someone might not notice at first when there's more prominent features about a character, ya know?
Hi sorry couple hours late but I completely agree with @"Aloe Vera".
@sp- I like how you are trying to draw a character everyday. Practice really does help. I also recommend getting Pinterest. There are so many tips on there, and I find it super helpful!
I’ve discovered I’m quite bad at capturing likeness even though apparently my sense for proportion/shape is decent, but I’ve only been drawing people from photos, so maybe if you wouldn’t mind I could try to draw your characters? I didn’t really want to start a different discussion to advertise or anything since I’m pretty sure they aren’t going to turn out too great but I do want to practise making a character look like a character, rather than drawing to look like a photo. Anyone else is welcome to share their characters if you’re fine with it looking not too great bearing in mind I’m definitely not an artist. Also I’m more comfortable with traditional art as for now so if you’re not bothered by that I’d really appreciate some characters.
I'd greatly appreciate you drawing my characters! But, if you wouldn't mind, I'd like to draw one of yours in return! Here's a few of my characters with more determined features:
Thanks a lot! I’m currently about 99% on one of my characters so I’ll send him when I’m (at this point at least) done with him, and meanwhile I’ll try drawing your characters. I probably won’t take too long because I’m not good enough right now to do things like colouring so they’re just going to be rough sketches. I’ll aim to do them all by the end of the week though.
Hey I’ve done one of them on paper, Celia Foxx I think. I think I MIGHT try to colour her in digitally after all? maybe? but also I realised I don’t know how to reply with images here lol.
Anyway, here’s the character I’m done with for now.
I hope I haven’t missed anything out but if you want any other details just let me know.
Amazing! I'll get to work on him, also! To post with the actual image, you'd have to upload the picture to a notebook character/item/etc. gallery, then click the image and copy the link.
Otherwise, you could upload it somewhere else and copy and paste the link there. I've noticed some people will use Google drive to share images.
Thank you so much, take your time with him. Also I might need more than until the end of the week after all, I had a lot of activities this week that I completely forgot about. Here’s my sketch of Celia though:
Awwwwwwwww that's so cute I love that drawing, thank you!!!
also yeah,,i might need a bit of time bc i've got this list (don't worry, Hash is in the list) of drawings and whenever i want to procrastinate i'll pick one from the list and i accidentally picked one that'll take a while sO as soon as I finish that i'll work on ya boi Hash!
but again, i really appreciate that drawing, thank you!
i really like drawing your characters because they’re detailed but not rigid and it’s fun for me to do and also good for practice, so thank you as well!
I have another one. How to add diversity when all of your main characters are siblings so there cant be any there.
You can get alerted on the main screen and in the main character discussion thing when you first hit discussion but I don't know if there's a way send notifications to your device while you're not on the site. Idk.
Note to non cat owners writing about characters with cats because I just thought of this:
When a cat is teething, it will chew on everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. Ponytail holders, earbuds, hairbrushes. My cat found where I store my ponytail holders and takes them to chew on. Having a childproof house ain't gonna do jack sweetheart. They jump. There are also cats that play fetch. They act like puppies that poop in a box and it's great. Lastly, what the heck are you doing, get a cat!!
I think someone already answered this, but some of them could be adopted, or step-siblings, or half-siblings. They can also be diverse in gender, sexuality, body type, physically and mentally, etc.
I'm currently struggling a bit with my characters motivations and how those motivations could them into the trouble and danger that the plot needs them to be in. They are still in mid-development too, so I was wondering what questions you think are most important when developing a character?
I'm currently struggling a bit with my characters motivations and how those motivations could them into the trouble and danger that the plot needs them to be in. They are still in mid-development too, so I was wondering what questions you think are most important when developing a character?
I think I'd start with their background and history because the things in their past really shape them as characters they will be and can explain their motivations as well. Like for example if someone was scammed before it could show that they'rd sort of naïve and not too suspicious but they would be more cautious after that. So I think a way to create conflict is if a character's motivation goes against another character's, or their own moral code/honour, and that would start turbulence within the character themself, and then their subsequent actions could lead to more outside conflicts. Or if they took a risk due to their motivation that got them in trouble that could get them to be more realistic about their goal/be more determined to achieve that goal, it could go either way.
As for questions, I usually start with the relationships and why, like if a character is a peace-lover they would more likely be friends with someone who shares their beliefs, rather than a brash, on-edge character who's aggressive and wants revenge. However that could be done by using the enemies to friends trope, or their desire to keep peace has them try to placate the aggressive character and keep them out of trouble.
Another important thing would be the character's perceived self-worth, if they're confident in their opinions/decisions, whether they highly value others' respect or constantly seek validation from others(I feel like those two are very different but there's a fine line). If a character is unsure of themself and therefore chooses not to share their opinion but ends up being right, they can start to develop resentment/superiority, or if their not speaking up leads to an unfortunate outcome for someone else, they could feel extreme guilt and either change their ways or inversely further devalue their self-worth.
This ended up a lot longer than I intended and most of it probably isn't relevant so TLDR, background influences their motivations, which can clash and cause conflict; think about the relationships between a character and their peers/themself.
