"So… you don't know Religion?? Not even like… Noah's Ark? Or Jesus' death and resurrection?"
"So… you don't know Religion?? Not even like… Noah's Ark? Or Jesus' death and resurrection?"
She shrugged. "Bits and pieces. Religion has never been fascinating to me. Anne never taught us much of anything about it, really. We just know - well, me and Phoenix - we know that there must be some sort of afterlife, because Seven's ghost -"
She broke off suddenly, a tear rolling down her cheek. She wiped it away.
"I could teach you… but It's be slightly biased."
"No, it's fine. I just believe in Seven's ghost, and I think that's all I need to believe in." She smiled, but it was pained by the lump in her throat.
"Are you sure?" He said, worrying if she would leave him because he was a demon.
"Yes, I'm sure." She squeezed her eyes shut and tried to keep the tears in. She knew playing Seven's games would be a mistake, that playing them would bring up this emotion, but she hadn't listened, and now she was paying the price for it. She was sitting here, in this cardboard box, talking about rockets and maps and Anne, and Seven's ghost, and suddenly, it was too much.
Let's play the rocket game!
Not the rocket game, Seven, I'm tired of the rocket game.
Aww, come on, Eight.
I'll play it with you, Seven.
A dimpled grin. Thanks, Six!
A gray, dry sob shook her chest. That voice had haunted her for years.
We're going on a rocket. Where do you want to go?
Let's go to the moon.
Right! A countdown from ten, a whooshing noise. Liftoff! Now we're in space! If we look through the windows, maybe we can see the moon!
They'd peeked out of the windows Anne had cut for them, spotting Phoenix, who was usually tucked in a corner, watching them curiously. She'd grown out of the rocket game too early.
Look, it's the constellation Eight. Seven had pointed; Phoenix had stuck her tongue out at him; Seven had giggled. Isn't it beautiful?
Beautiful, yeah.
Seven had never called her beautiful. Nobody had ever called her beautiful except for Anne.
Her shoulders shook, and she bent her head, tears pouring down her face.
"What's wrong? Did I upset you??" He said, hugging her
"Memories," she whispered, pressing her head against his chest.
We're on the moon now! Put on your spacesuit!
Giggling, they'd snuck out of the cardboard rocket and bounded across the moon.
Arrgh! An alien! Seven said, pointing at Anne, who had smiled and roared, hands up in pretend claws.
I'm an alien who will eat you for supper! She'd chased them around the room, finally falling when Seven pretended to shoot her. Phoenix had watched the entire thing from her corner, showing almost no emotion.
Quick, back to the rocket! There might be more of them!
They'd played for a while, and then Anne had finally come and stuck her head through the window. Hello, my little astronauts.
It's an alien! Seven had pretended to shoot her again, but Anne was unfazed, reaching through to ruffle Seven's curly hair.
It's dinnertime, she'd said, and they reluctantly stopped playing. Seven teased Phoenix for not joining in, but Phoenix, as usual, was aloof, and Nyx had watched, an outsider.
"Just memories," she whispered.
"Are you sure?" He asked, concerned
"I just miss Seven." Her shoulders slumped.
"Seven's in a better place now…" He assured
The thought was bittersweet, and she curled up against his chest, still crying.
"I know."
(I have work 😭 I'll be back in a few hours)
"Okay…" He said, hugging her tightly
Nyx sighed and snuggled against his chest.
(I found their song - Crashing (feat. Bahari) by Illenium)
(I fuckig agree!!!)
(Glad you do!)
Nyx eventually stopped crying; sniffling, she wiped the tears away with her thumb and sighed.
"Are you better now?'
"I think so."
"Do you wanna continue with this game or not?" He asked gently
"I don't know. I don't think so."
"Okay then…" He put the stuff up.
"Wanna watch a movie?"
"Sure."
He picked out a random movie
