She leaned her head on his shoulder, and then with her fork and stealing his knife she stole a bite of the ribs. "I'm sorry but they are so fucking good. I'd probably die for these ribs. They're my mom's recipe too…oh right you have to meet my 14 siblings…that will prove to be an interview experience." She nodded and went back to her food.
Connor looked at her suspiciously.
14…? 14?!
A family with fifteen children is a bit much but he couldn’t really say anything. He just nodded after a bit, stealing a small bite from the ribs.
“Hmph—“ he smiled when he finally tasted the ribs. They were actually good like she’s said. Perhaps even more so.
"I know it's a lot. My mom is a single mom but if I didn't have her I'd be dead. A lot of us would. I've tried to commit…a few times and without her I think most of us would've gone through with it. All of us have had really really shitty lives. All in all you'll like her. She even is okay with murder as long as we follow certain rules and protocol." She nods and continued to stuff her face. "It's so good! I friggin MISS her cooking!"
As much as he wanted to ask her about the whole committing thing, he decided against it. That was something for another day. At least, he’d hoped so. It would be nice to get to know her more considering how interesting of a person she was.
“I see.” He replied plainly, eating slowly as to not ruin his cold image. Of course, with how good the ribs were, he really wanted to just gnaw on them but he guess that was for days to come.
Evelyn suddenly reached over and stole a whole rib. "If you eat that slow we're gonna be here until Christmas dude." She then cut off a whole biscuit with plenty of gravy on it,and plopped it on his phone. "If it's some social image thing that's bullshit. No one here knows you. It's good fucking food. Enjoy yourself!"
Connor sighed softly with a smile when she spoke and finally started eating at a speed which seemed more reasonable with food like this. Eventually, he was finished and exhaled happily.
“Well, that was good food alright.” He commented with a small laugh. He raised his hand up and waved just slightly, calling over the woman so he could pay for the food.
Evelyn reached into her guitar case and pulled out the credit card from the pocket,as she swallowed the last of her drink. "My mom's cooking is better than this because she uses 110% fresh ingredients. At least, as much as we can. She's learned not to raise chickens. We all got emotionally attached and cried whenever she killed one, and then we wouldn't eat. So she gave them all back to wherever she got them from."
He attempted to hand the money he had on him to the lady before Evelyn could with her credit card. He wasn’t going to let her pay for the meal? After all, he knew of her status so he didn’t want her to pay for him as well. If she was going to be arrogant and will still pay, he’ll at least pay for his part of the meal. He won’t let her pay for everything.
She let him pay, as otherwise she would be scrounging around for cash come rent day, so she huffed and let it slide this one time. "Geeze no comments on my childhood trauma? What…do you not want to meet my family? If you don't that's fine. I don't have to see you ever again. If I can't even bring you to see them you aren't worth falling in love with." She said this as she began to gather her things. The bag full of clothes, guitar case, and of course her wits. She couldn't go getting silenced like that again, she'd be seen as weak otherwise.
He looked at her for a moment.
“I didn’t say I didn’t want to meet them. I just didn’t know how to reply. Sorry, I’m not that much of a talker and… I was afraid that I would say something a bit too sensitive about it…” he spoke softly in an sincerely apologetic tone. He didn’t want to feel like he didn’t care… he did. But he couldn’t risk showing it and having his attempt go to shreds because he didn’t know which words to use.
"Quit walking on egg shells around me. It'll be your downfall. It's okay to just express yourself naturally. We're human after all." The waitress came back and set down the bill and the change. Evelyn then got up and gave Lucy a small hug. "Good luck love birds!" Lucy smiled and walked off after clearing the plates from our table. Evelyn waited for Connor so they could leave together.
Connor sighed softly to himself. Another fuck up on his part. He got his things and followed Evelyn. He smiled softly at her.
“I’ll try to express myself better for you…” he mentioned, looking around. It was dark, a night’s wind whispering can be heard blowing through the quiet air. It was a nice scene to him at least.
“So… back to your place?”
"Yup! Back to mine." This was not a nice scene. Did Evelyn love nights like this? Yes in safe neighborhooods. As she walked out and turned down into the first neighborhood they have to walk through, the cat calling started. Her grip was tight on Connor's hand. She'd been molested and done wrong by men in these parts of town many times before,so who knew what would happen. Her guard was obviously up as she walked quickly, eyes glancing down everywhere trying to keep a constant eye on her surrounding's. She could hear them from porches and a guy passing her on the sidewalk grabbed her ass, which made her stomp on his foot. Overall, she was not safe.
Connor turned to the man almost immediately, himself wanting to do more to the man than Evelyn’s foot stomp. But of course, that wouldn’t be a good play on his part. As he continued to maneuver through the streets with her hand in his, he kept a keen eye on her.
“Are we getting on the bus as earlier?” He asked quickly, looking around for potential freaks.
She nodded. "Yup. I'd rather do that then walk." Eventually they got to the bus stop and immediately her arms were around him, tucking herself into his chest, not feeling safe at all.
The man looked at her with softness in his eyes as they waited for the bus. He wrapped his own arms around her, knowing how she felt. It wasn’t a surprise as to why she was somewhat afraid of the environment… after a bit, the bus came and he took her onto the bus, going to the back like they did before.
She clung to his side as they walked, shooting a glare at every person who sat. Since it was so late there was only 3 people on the bus, all of them shooting the same glare back. As soon as they sat down she began to breath a little bit easier, her grip loosening as her arms slide away and she sat upright. Her head rested on his shoulder as she tried to stop her heart from beating triple time, and still her jello nerves.
Connor sat there, letting her lean against his shoulder. If she was afraid, he had to be the one who was being tough and unafraid of the environment. His heart was pounding uncontrollably though… most likely because of how she smelled and how light her head felt on him. God… he wanted to hug her more but perhaps he’ll wait until they were home. The ride couldn’t have been long now… right?
The ride was only a 15 minute ride, and as soon as the stopped pulled up, Evelyn got up and rushed out, and began to run home. She lived in the worst part of town yet, and had been cornered in alleyways before if she wasn't careful. She then remembered her love and decided to stand under a street light and take out Batty, to give him time to catch up, eyes constantly glancing around.
Connor quickly rushed out after her, genuinely worried where she’d ran off to. Upon finding her under the street light, he sighed and walked to her.
“Why get Batty out? Worried?” He asked, getting to her side and wrapping one hand around her shoulders as he continued to walk. It wasn’t a long distance from where they were to her home. At least, that was what he remembered.
She nodded. "Been raped more than once. No matter what if you don't keep your wits about you, things can get bad fast. No matter who you're lover is, yourself and what you have is ALWAYS your last resort." She shrugged and kissed his cheek. "I have a feeling you don't know how to street and dirty fight. Lost without your knives. So. Gotta keep her out. Could be the difference between life and death." She grabbed his hand and kept walking quickly.
Connor kept a careful eye on the streets in case anyone decided to look at Evelyn strangely. Thankfully, those who did quickly averted their eyes when they saw his chaotically demonic red eyes. He smiled as they neared Evelyn’s house. His heart was racing for some reason… god, there was something about her that made him feel so… safe. He didn’t know what it was though.
She bolted up the stairs as soon as they got the apartment, and opened her apartment quickly, before setting her stuff down. Her cat ran into her arms and she picked up the siamese tabby cat mix, nuzzling into Precious's stomach. The cat licked Evelyn's face as Evelyn covered her in kisses. "Hi there spoiled. Are you my spoiled baby? Hm? Yes you are. Hi there beautiful. We have a guest…" She continued to babytalk the cat while walking to the kitchen, and then Evelyn set down the cat and fed her. She felt calm and safe now, as she headed to her bedroom, took off the wig, and began to brush her hair.
Connor followed her inside and set his things just beside her. As he didn’t want to be that much of a nuisance, he just decided to sit on the floor, not saying much. He then proceeded to look around. Sure, the apartment wasn’t in the best condition but that didn’t mean it was bad. He could get used to this… though, he did personally want to clean and change some things. Well, he’ll bring that up later.
He waited patiently in the living room, mostly for Evelyn to finish. God… him? In a room with another person? A female? He wasn’t sure if this was a dream or a nightmare… perhaps it was initially the latter, and now it was the former.
Evelyn walked in. "You're sitting on a spot on the carpet where my cat puked a month ago. Dude c'mon sit on the couch you're a guest not an animal. Not only that you're my love. I wish I had a better place. But. It's home. I'm trying to move into a better neighborhood asap but getting good enough pay to get out is hard." She sighed and shrugged. "I'm gonna get out of this makeup so. Don't scream when you see me without it. I know I'm ugly." She then went to her little vanity in her room and began to wipe it off and then do her face cleaning routine.
