Hey pals I’m gonna be 100% tacky and say that more practice is the way to go. I’ve been drawing for almost five years and I’m only now getting stuff that I myself like. So just practice a lot on the stuff you want to use and slowly upgrade yourself. For instance, if you go on paper and pencil (traditional), just start with pen (for line art depending on your style) and pencil and slowly upgrade to better paper, sketchbooks, and even tools such as tortillions and stubs (which I most recently got). There’s no big rush, really.

Also speaking of style, try to find one that you like the most, and once you get the basics of it down (anatomy is a big part of that, anatomy’s hardddddd), then you can stem off and find your own!

I’ve tried practicing with and without references but I just don’t have that understanding of Art where I can just start sketching something out. Honestly right now drawing is the skill I want to perfect the most but I just can’t seem to get it.

Well I really wouldn’t suggest drawing/sketching at your stage without a reference. It’s super important. And just let your mind go. Have something you wanna draw in your head and look up references akin to it.

I actually don’t have too much trouble with (female) anatomy but things like facial feature, hair, shading, muscles, clothing, etc just don’t work for me.

Facial features are something (depending on your style) that are super important, though. I would also suggest working on body types with muscle and no muscle to try and get proportions down.

@ninja_violinist

my advice (though also 100% tacky) is just… draw what you wanna draw
that character from that show? real life people? dumb comics? go for it. go ham. go crazy. draw your old photos. draw your friends. draw your pets. draw memes. draw your characters. redraw other people's art (but don't post it online or claim it as your own that's not cool that's art theft).

and if you start and you can't figure out how to draw it
or if you think it looks bad after you finish
then look up a video or a tutorial "how to draw x"
follow along with the parts you understand
try again
repeat until satisfied

look at other people's art
absorb it into your soul
if you have the opportunity, ask them questions about it!! if you don't, that's ok too.

don't do art if actually, deep down, you don't want to be doing art right now. that's ok. it's not your job. it's not an obligation. if it's not fun, or if you don't feel like it'll help you have more fun in the future, stop.
don't feel pressure to share your art. it's yours, for your own personal enjoyment first.
if you love to share your art? excellent!! share it. give it as presents to your friends. draw for school projects if the opportunity arises. draw for your parents. draw for your grandparents. (my honest advice in the beginning? don't post it online unless you have a very thick skin. people are selfish and it sucks when it feels like no one cares.)
you wanna be an artist? congrats, you're artist. Boom. done. stop worrying about that and just do what you enjoy.

am I qualified to give out art advice???? absolutely not
