Cryptic Diary
Lighter than you'd expect for a book of its size. From the outside, it looks like a normal book, but inside, it was hollow and contained a set of smaller pages. The hidden book appeared to be a diary, with dated entries... but the contents were gibberish. There was no punctuation, the words seemed almost chosen at random. It also contained some of the Esoteric symbols from the Threatening Letter.

Fancy scabbard
An ornately tooled leather scabbard for a straight-bladed dagger. When Smoke found it, it contained a surprisingly cheap dagger, which seemed out of place. He suspects the person who was snooping when he walked in stole a more interesting dagger, but left the sheath behind so the theft wouldn't be detected as quickly.

Invitation to Lunch at Trollskull Manor (19 Mpn 1492)
Renaer,
It's occurred to me that we've yet to show you the new place! If you're free, you ought to drop by Trollskull Manor for lunch in a couple of days. Let us say, the 21st of Marpenoth at noon? We're just beginning renovations, so I hope you will forgive the mess. Eager to see you again, my friend.
Sincerely, Smoke

Paper bird
Enchanted origami used for rapid communication. Basically, you write a note on it, write the recipient's name, and it flies right to them. Formerly in common use by the Harpers of Waterdeep, but discontinued for being too conspicuous. Mirt is the only person we know who still uses them on a regular basis.

Postponement Missive
Shortly before his disappearance, Galvin Barnabas sent word to the Mikal family that he would be an hour late to their meeting. The following was delivered to the Mikal estate around 3:00 pm, 12th Marpenoth (the day of the murder), by a young drow messenger unknown to the Mikals.
Dearest Inhala (House of Mikal),
I regret the late hour of my message, but I must postpone our meeting this afternoon by one...

Threatening Letter
Found in Galvin Barnabas' desk drawer, mixed in with business letters. It stood out because it was addressed to Barnabas personally, rather than the Emporium. It contained a short poem with a hidden message in Thieves' Cant:
We know your secret.
... along with some Esoteric symbols Smoke couldn't identify (the same as those appearing in the Cryptic Diary). It did not appear to have been opened.
