Many people have heard about the castle under the hill. Supposedly, it's filled to the brim with monsters and treasure, but no one has ever been able to enter and return with their lives. So, it's also filled with corpses. But the great stories never include that kind of stuff. Years ago, your favorite family member went to claim the treasure. As per usual, they didn't return, leaving you devastated. Right there and then, you made a vow: you would be the first to go to the castle under the hill, slay the monsters, obtain the treasure… and finally put the bones of your family member to rest. The night before leaving on your quest, you meet a particular character at the tavern who just happens to want to go to the castle under the hill as well. Since half the danger is just getting to the castle, you decide to let them come along. The adventure ahead might be filled with danger, but it also has amazing sights and hopefully, riches, fulfillment, and fame.

Rules and Other Fun Stuff:

  • This will be taking place in more olden times, so plan accordingly.
  • You can totally have some magic, just don't be OP.
  • This could have romance, but it probably wouldn't be the main focus of the story.
  • Please be active!
  • Cursing is fine, just don't do it every other word.
  • I may ask for a writing sample, and I may turn you down if it doesn't fit with what I'm looking for.
  • If you have any questions or want to add something, just ask me!

(If both of you are still interested, could I see a writing sample from both of you? If they're both good, I'll create a separate thread for @Calanthe.)

Alexander looked around the house. His heart pounding heard. He had heard a rustle in his house. He only had one plant. A small bush plant. He walked over and saw that it was stain with blood. Oh sh- -… He thought, moving the plant box aside. Then, he saw it. It was a black creature the size of his palm. It was chewing on something… He quickly turned to his animal birdcage. "Holy crap!" He yelled, horrified. There was a budgie on the flora of the cage and then he realized that he had two birds and one was missing…

Mark shuffled into his apartment, exhausted from the long day of work. Moving and installing all of the shelves was not fun, but at least the paint job made the place look nicer. He walked past a mirror and got a good look of himself, 'Man, I look bad.' Which was no lie. He was covered in sawdust and dirt from drilling holes into the walls and potting and putting the plants onto the new shelves. But, he didn't really care, he was living his dream, and was finally able to run his own shop. He knew that his aunt would be proud of him if only she could see him now. But his family decided to have absolutely no connections with him after he left home, they were too disappointed in him about "the incident.' The one thing his family never talked about because they were too ashamed of what had happened. It wasn't like they ever tried to hear him out, or understand what had happened. They just immediately blamed him and made his life hell, which was why, when he got the chance, he left. His phone in his back pocket began to ring and he moved to grab it. He looked at the number and didn't recognize it, but he was one of those people that always answered. He picked up and said a quiet hello, when the other person responded, his jaw dropped, he hadn't expected the guy from the tattoo parlor to actually him, he figured that they would just have each other's phone numbers, just in case. He blushed slightly as the guy continued to talk, until the guy told him the news he had been subtly mentioning, "T-the plaza's been burnt down?" Mark stammered trying to understand the news. "Oh god!" His knees buckled and he landed on the floor, 'Everything I've been working for is now gone.' A tear trickled down his cheek, he had just finished paying off his mortgage for the building, and now it was finally his, but now. . .now it was gone.

@Calanthe

(Oh, I really liked @I_Am_A_Lost_Boy 's style, but okay, so should I get to work on the character form?)

@MarDeColores this is not it kids

(Oh, shoot, were they joking about heading out? I suck at interpreting that stuff over the internet. And yeah, sure!)

@Calanthe

(I am not sure, and same here, I suck at understanding jokes in the real world too. So uhm, what sort of template do you use? And do you approve of faceclaims?)

@MarDeColores this is not it kids

(I'm glad I'm not the only one. I usually just have a simple one with the name, looks, age, and so on. If you want, I can write a simple one up. And sure! I usually don't use them, but you're free to.)

@Calanthe

(Okay, sorry, about the characters, I understand that is not completely romance, but it it MxM, FxF, or MxF?)

@MarDeColores this is not it kids

(Oh, I see. It's probably going to be MxM, but if you're okay with it, I want to use one of my non-binary characters for this.)

Here is a template if you need it! Feel free to add anything to it.

Here is my child!
Name: Nova Ellis
Age: 22
Gender/pronouns: Non-binary, they/them
Sexuality: Panromantic, asexual.
Appearance: Nova is short– only 5'2"– but they're strong. They have fluffy auburn hair that falls to around their chin and a button nose. Their eyes a sharp and playful, colored a light gold. Their skin is a light brown color and tanned from being in the sun a lot. Their ears are pierced and they usually wear small gold hoops. Nova always wears leather armor dyed dark red when they're adventuring, as well as a black lace-up shirt and black leggings.
Basic personality: Nova is really playful and they usually have a smirk on their lips. They don't have ties to anything, really, and are really spontaneous because of that. Their mind can change in a flash, and they sometimes make really stupid decisions because they didn't think through anything.
Short background: Nova was born and raised in a small town. They didn't really care for their parents and left the first chance they could, at age 17. After leaving, they moved to a larger town and started hearing about the castle under the hill. They'd never really wanted to go after that specific treasure, and they still didn't, but other adventures did appeal to them. They started training and getting better at everything, and the ordinary adventures didn't challenge them as much as they wanted to. So, they decided to go to the castle under the hill.
Any magical abilities or items: They got a sword that glowed and never got dull during one of their quests. They also have the ability to shoot deadly "stars" out of their fingers, though they can only do it a few times before having to rest.
Other: Their chosen weapon is their sword, but they're pretty good at throwing knives as well.

Name: Kelton Algernon Carlyle

Age: 23

Gender/pronouns: Male

Sexuality: "I. . .I, er. . .I'm straight." Angry mumbling "W-why?"

(That can and will change, he was basically forced into believing he was straight by his father)

Appearance:(I can't even think of one at the moment, so I'll cheat and use a face claim, but if you want I can definitely elaborate.)
But Faceclaim: Benjamin Orlando

He wears his father's metal armor since his father had been a knight in his younger days. It is still a little bit large for him, but he's growing into it. In a way, for him to inherit it over his siblings meant the world to him, since he always looked up to and admired his father. The man may not have been the greatest person in reality, but in Kelton's eyes, he was a true hero.

Basic personality: He can be a bit outspoken at times, and very protective of his friends and family. He feels as though he needs to just be there for them and protect them, even if they don't want it at the moment. If anything, he could be easily described as a mother, caring, somewhat wise, and definitely crazy at times. But it does take him a while to actually grow close and care for people. In fact, he really tries to avoid most people and prefers to travel and spend his time alone. Kelton sort of feels like if he makes this trip he's finally proving himself to his family, to the world, to himself, and to his uncle.

Short background: He had a quiet, peaceful childhood in a small secluded village where most of his family lived. He spent most alone out in the woods watching the animals and just relax to the soft breeze. In the evenings he, his siblings, and cousins would sit at the feet of his uncle and father and listen to the stories that they would tell before the children would go to sleep. Then was the first time he ever heard of the castle, and he and his uncle would plan on going there together, but that never happened. His father forbade the two from anything like that, and his uncle in fury decided to set on the journey alone, to prove to his brother that it was safe. Kelton truly hoped that his uncle would come back, but for some reason, he knew that it wouldn't happen. And his worst fear came true, his uncle never did come back, and he knew that one day he would go to the castle and find out the truth.

Any magical abilities or items: He has a bit of a connection with the flora and fauna, not too strong to be considered a mage, but strong enough to be able to summon vines out of the ground, or be able to communicate at times with an animal. But using his powers too much will destroy him, and he just goes limp and unconscious. He never has really spoken about his powers or anything related to that. In fact, he has tried to convince himself that magic really doesn't exist and that whatever is happening to him is just fake.

Other: Kelton prefers a broadsword for his weapon, especially his father's. In fact, he stole it the night he left.

Nova was bored. The tavern they were sitting in had maybe two people there, and it didn't seem like it would get any more crowded. Not only that, but they hadn't been on an interesting adventure in what seemed like ages. In reality, it had only been four days. Maybe it was time to start thinking about going to the castle under the hill. Nova ran a finger around the lip of their glass and let out a breath. The castle under the hill… that was all anyone could talk about these days. Castle this, castle that. They'd always thought it was a little annoying to hear about it, but it definitely wouldn't be annoying if their name went along with it. Not because they'd died there, but because they'd walked out of there with all the treasure they could hold. That would be awesome. A lazy smile floated across their face. Before that happened, though, they'd need to find some people to go with, gather supplies, and do so much more. The smile faded– planning stuff wasn't their favorite thing to do.

@Calanthe

Kelton entered the tavern wordlessly, he had tried to find a quiet spot in the forest to relax and figure out his plans on how to get to the castle, but there were many unfamiliar creatures, and he just felt nervous there. He sat down at one of the empty tables and pulled out his leather-bound journal. He had already written down some of his plans and ideas, he just had no idea how any of them would work. He sighed shaking his head at his writings, he heard on the workers approach him and he just waved him away, the last thing he needed was to be distracted from his work. He set out the maps he and his uncle had made before he had disappeared and his journal trying to find the shortest path to the castle. Kelton wasn't going to see the beautiful sights that surrounded the area, but rather find the castle and make his family proud. He leaned back and studied each map noting the similarities and differences between them. As he thought, an idea formed in his mind, 'If I could just communicate the animals, perhaps that could help?' But he knew that was a far-fetched idea, the animals were very unreliable when it came to directions. he smirked wryly thinking of what had happened when he had asked a rabbit for help to getting to this village, it had not gone well at all.

The door to the tavern opened and Nova turned to see who it was. Someone they'd never seen before walked in, sat down, and pulled out a journal. Now that might be interesting. Nova craned their head, then moved down the bar a few seats until they were almost right behind the newest patron. They turned around in their chair and rested their chin on the backrest. It looked like he had a bunch of maps leading to… ooh, could it be? Nova leaned forward, squinting at the maps. It looked like they were all showing paths going towards the castle under the hill. Maybe they wouldn't have to go searching for someone to go with them after all.
"Are you going to the castle under the hill?" They asked, their voice smooth and soft.

@Calanthe

Kelton nodded slightly, not even looking up at the person speaking to him. He was sort of lost in his thoughts and ideas but realizing how rude that may seem he looked up and turned to face the person behind him, "Yes, I am going there. Might I ask why?" He knew that a lot of people in the area told fables of the castle and that was the last thing he needed at the moment, he had only come here in hopes of figuring out his ideas, then maybe finding a place to lodge for the night. He quickly studied the person sitting behind him, "If you are going to warn me or tell about how bad of an idea it is, trust me, I know all of that, you need not waste your time in telling me." He reached for his journal and pencil and began to write out a list of things that he would need, "So, if you would be kind enough to excuse me, I would like to get back to my work." Only after he said that did he realize that he must have sounded like a major fool, but at this point of his life, he really didn't care, he just wanted to find the castle, get the treasure, then come back.

“Goodness, you’re a friendly one, aren’t you?” Nova exclaimed, the accompanying smile indicating that they were joking. “No, I’m not going to warn you. Anyone with working ears knows everything there is to know about that place, and you look like you have working ears. As it happens, I am also thinking of going to the castle under the hill, deadly dangers and all.” They grabbed their bag and hopped off their chair. This conversation couldn’t keep going like it was at the moment. With a cheery grin, Nova slid into an empty chair at the guy’s table. “Are you looking for an adventuring companion? I assure you, I’m quite competent.” They leaned forward, resting their elbows on the table.
