The Kingdom of Praven is in a state of civil war. It has been for the past seven years. For decades the prosperous kingdom has been ruled by an ‘Evil King’. He is a usurper to the throne, having married one of the princesses and then slaughtering the royal family, leaving him the only suitable heir. There is no secret bastard son or daughter, no drop of royal blood left in a warm body. Even those under suspicion of being related were squashed, even those who were the subject of baseless rumors. Revon is efficient, ruthless, and brutally effective.
There was discontent of course, with his bloody ascension to the throne, but not enough to warrant a full scale uprising. The King ruled with an iron fist, strict in his laws and his decrees, but it wasn’t insufferable. Peasants had lived through worse kings before, and likely would again. They could let off enough stress with their rumors and idle talk of his monstrousness. This lasted until the second decade of his rule.
No one quite knew what had happened. Some claimed a demon had devoured the king's soul, others that he had always been a demon, still more that it was simple greed, more poisonous to a man's blood than even the deadly brittlebane plant, which could rot a man's skin seconds after touching it. It started out small, a few raised taxes here or there with no clear answer given as to why, then it increased. More decrees, more gold demanded, more debt to pile up.
Revon was newly dubbed The Black Gold King, a horrified echo of the dark blood spilled as people struggled to pay off their debts. Those that couldn’t were executed, enslaved, or.. Joined the army. If you enlisted all your debts were forgiven. But why? The people wondered. There was no war to fight beyond border skirmishes and a petty squabble with landowning lords from neighboring countries. Why?
There was no answer given, just more taxes handed out. The final straw was land confiscation, as is often the case. You can mistreat the people as much as you wish, starve them, beat them, cheat them out of wages. But take their land? That was war.
Revolution was a whisper at first, then a roar. Peasants and defectors from the army constitute the revolt Neighbor against neighbor, as the King still has his better trained army, well fed, well paid, and to some degree, loyal, as these men are given the opportunity to take care of their families.
Yet there is a prophecy, one that is both strengthening and disheartening depending on the viewpoint. Revon can not be defeated until his final treasure has been destroyed. Else the Kingdom would continue its internal fight well into the next generations, tearing the already damaged lands into irreparable pieces. The goal is to find this ‘final treasure’, destroy it, and bring the war to an end.
My character will be the general leading the revolt, and has been fighting nearly since the beginning of the seven year war. Anyone who decides to join can discuss with me how to fit their characters in, I’m willing to be super flexible as long as you are willing to be the same for me! We’re here to have fun after all!
Rules:
- Good grammar is a must! I expect long responses from everyone, try to make it detailed, if you want to get whimsical or medieval, go for it! Bonus points for you! Mwah!
- Gore and violence will be expected, we’re in a war zone people, not Derbyshire.
- Please be patient with everyone else, we’re all doing our best. Characters can be jerks but please try to be kind and respectful out of character.
- PDA is fine, but anything past that point goes straight to the DM’s if you so wish. I personally will not, as I don’t like writing anything like that.
- Swearing is fine! No real slurs, but if you can make up a fantasy one, go for it! Still do try to keep that to a minimum though, unless your character's whole thing is fantasy racist. (Why are you roleplaying that? Idk, you do you boo.)
- I might ask for a writing sample if I don’t know you! I reserve the right to say no.
- (Uhhh am I missing anything else? If I am that goes here lol)
I’ll post character sheets and answer any questions in the morning, as I won’t get back to this until then! I'm exhausted and need my eight hours. (Why am I making it now you ask? … Shhhh-)
