forum Anybody know what the leader of a band of mercenaries would be called??

Specifically modern mercenaries, like ex-military or whatever. I'm not educated on the intricacies of the ranks of the American army, therefore I can't even guess what "rank" a person like this would be considered in conversation. Captain? Commander? Or would they refer to him more casually, as "boss" or something? Help pls ^^;

Honestly any of those could work, since a mercenary band has less rigid ranking than in the military. Captain was the first thing that came to mind, but commander is also good, and depending on the relationship between the subordinates and the leader, boss could also work on a more informal level.
