Happy to answer any questions on programming, especially in the field of websites and the computers that power them. I've been programming for 15+ years and have a B.S. in Computer Science, so I hope I can help! :)
So I know zilch about programming, and I've always wondered what the screen looks like when you're programming something. Is it just a black screen and a bunch of gibberish in a green font? Or can you see the website as you're programming it?

I'm not any programming expert and I'm not gonna pretend I am, but I assume the screen format would generally depend on the program you use, most likely just a plain white with black font. As for the actual code - it's not gibberish, it's a series of commands. You type a word (for example Print: ""Hello World"") and the program recognises that word and acts upon it (for example Text reading Hello World appears) Black screen and green gibberish is a bit of a Hollywood cliche designed to make the screen look confusing and intimidating and has just generally become a stereotype. Like I said I'm not an expert though. Advanced code likely looks a lot more confusing than I described but I don't see why it shouldn't follow the same idea.
