Okay, what the fuck is the Bacon Rebellion?
Alright SO assuming I’ve got the right bacon rebellion, it was an armed rebellion in 1676-1677 led by Nathaniel Bacon (hence, Bacon Rebellion) against the rule of Governor William Berkeley. The goals were changes in Virginia’s Indian-Frontier Policy.
So it wasn’t literal bacon. Just our homeboy Nathaniel really lucked out in names.
Bacon rebelled against the governor because the governor had dismissive policies to the western frontier, particularly leaving Bacon out of the inner circle and refusing to let him partake in fur trade. Attacks by the Doeg People* led to the uprising, and Berkeley had failed to realize the demands of the colonists regarding their safety.
Thousands of Virginians from all classes and races rose up in arms against the governor, attacking Native Americans and eventually chasing Berkeley from Jamestown, Virginia and torching the capital.
At first the rebellion was suppressed by some armed merchant ships whose captains sided with Berkeley, and the loyalists. Soon after government forces from England arrived and spent many years defeating pockets of resistance and reforming the colonial government to become more in control once more (direct royal control by Britain.)
*Native American people living in Virginia. Their raid contributed to the uprising.
Thanks bro.
