Is there any explanation on how the moving portraits work and are made?

based on my research, the portraits are painted like any normal portrait, but are enchanted. the portraits ability to move, talk, and walk into other paintings depends on the skill of the witch/wizard.
the people in the portraits will never be able to have a particularly in-depth discussion about more complex aspects of their lives, since they are merely two-dimensional.
