This is happening for me, too, but there are only certain users I can't PM

Have those users made sure their usernames fit the new guidelines? If they already have, perhaps message andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer) and outline which accounts aren’t working for PMs.

BTW, what exactly are the new guidelines? I'm kinda having some trouble myself!

@The-N-U-T-Cracker

There are guidelines for usernames?

It was a recent update.
I'm pretty sure spaces in usernames are no longer valid, along with names over 40 characters long. There are other details but that's just what I remember.

Austin and Miriam both have invalid usernames, in order to fix that they'll have to remove any spaces.

It hasn't, like, said anything though…

This is the update that added username rules. Since the forums software we use never intended for spaces and other characters in the name, the rules are there to ensure the forums stay more stable and things (like @-mentions, PMs, commenting, etc) don't unexpectedly break with updates moving forward. I didn't want to immediately invalidate everyone's usernames so they only apply to username changes going forward – in other words, you can keep your (invalid) usernames if you want, but there might be pieces of the forums that don't work (like before this update) if so.

Usernames are now limited to 40 characters max. These characters can be numbers, letters, or a few special characters (e.g. *, $, !, etc – the acceptable characters are on your profile edit page).

If you have an invalid username now, don't worry: you will not be forced to change it. Your username-based profile may not work and @-mentions may continue to not always work for you until you do change it. Whenever you'd like, you can change it to whatever you want as long as the new username fits the new username rules.
