Hi! I recently purchased a few months of Premium to work with some people to create a series of roleplaying universes. One of the features we were looking to use is the timelines feature. Although I realize the feature is still in beta, we are currently struggling with sharing and co-editing timelines.

Within the timelines tab: Although the timelines tab under Writing will display the correct number of timelines shared when viewing “All Universes,” the page only displays timelines created by that specific user.

Within the universes that are associated with the timeline: When someone who is not the creator of the timeline tries to view the timeline through a shared universe, the page either crashes or notes that the individual "does not have permission" to view the page despite the page being part of a universe that the person has access to.

Although making a timeline public can allow a contributor to view the timeline, it does not allow the contributor to edit and is not ideal for a private universe. Timelines created by a contributor who doesn't have Premium, but has access to a universe created by a Premium subscriber tend to disappear when any feature of the timeline is edited or remain inaccessible (permission not granted, crashing, etc.) to all parties involved.

Is it currently possible to share timelines with contributors in a given universe?

Many thanks for the help. Overall, Notebook has provided an excellent platform for collective worldbuilding. We look forward to seeing where the site goes moving forward, and I hope this provides some insight into the new timelines feature.

Hey there!

Unfortunately, timelines (and documents) don't support multiple people editing them at the same time – so, to prevent any unintentional data loss, they're limited to just being editable by their owner (and not any contributors) right now. It looks like viewing a private timeline from a contributor might be bugged right now (contributors should be able to see them!), so I'll make sure that gets fixed in the next update. Thanks for letting me know about that! (I'll also look into timelines created by people without Premium; it sounds like there might be some issues there, too.)

I'm glad you're enjoying the site so far! There's still a lot to do and multiple people contributing on things at the same time is definitely something that would be super useful to have, and I'd love to add it. It just takes some time, since it's a big project that I want to make sure I get right. I don't know when it'll be ready, but I'll be sure to post here when it is! :)
