I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while and just haven’t been able to get it

oh, it's like this!
character name
[character name] (link to character's page), but WITHOUT the space in between
[open bracket] character name [close bracket][open parenthesis] link to character's page [close parenthesis]

Keep in mind there should be NO SPACE between the closing bracket and opening parenthesis, but you can use spaces in the character's name. Also, you can use this to link anything to any words, so instead of "character name" you can put whatever you want, even full sentences, as long as it's inside the bracket.
What you're doing is basically creating a hyperlink.
