If one contributor has not done something in a category, but another contributor has, It is far more likely to show empty to them, even if they should obviously have access.
Sometimes this can still be found in universe "In this universe", but not always.
The Advance pages you get from paid membership, don't auto set the universe they in properly for association purposes every time. This is far more problematic on wife's account, as I'm the one with the paid membership. I can kind of fix it, she can't, so this could be a connected issue.

I just pushed out tonight's release, which should fix this. Previously, as you said, having no created pages in a category would often display that category as empty, even if you had access to pages in that category in contributing universes. This should now be fixed: the sidebar should now show the correct counts for all pages in universes you contribute to, and clicking on those categories should now properly show all the pages you have access to.
