You think basketball is hard?
You think football is hard?
You think soccer, or swimming, or debate, or whatever else is hard?
Try writing a novel.
Try sitting at your desk with your head in your hands
Staring at a treacherously blank page
Day
After day
After day
While characters and plots
Swim hazily in your vision
Like half-remembered dreams
You are trying to improve
Try being so frustrated with yourself
So disgusted with your first draft
And your plot holes
And your inconsistency
That you just want to chuck the whole manuscript
Into a fire.
Try fighting against writer’s block,
That invisible monster
Who has almost limitless power
Try killing off characters
Who matter as much to you
As the friends in your life
Try screaming inside
Try grinding your teeth in frustration
Try yelling at the stupid words
Until you collapse
Into a helpless heap
Devoid of imagination
Try stretching your brain in every direction
Until it hurts
Try working out plot holes
Try researching things no one in their right mind
Would ever research
Try being caught between wanting to finish
And wanting to stop
Because it hurts so bad
Because writing a novel
Is the hardest thing
You have to know everything
And nothing
And someday
You will finish
Shout a cry of victory to the sky
But until then
You must bleed
Your frustration and anger
Disappointment and distraction
Onto the page.
