Chapter 1.
You may be wondering who I am, but I'll get to that later. Right now, I'm walking to my first day of fifth grade at Treville Elementary School. My best friend, Natalie Fenwood, strolled right beside me. We talked about our new teacher, Mr. Bryer, and everyone else in our small class. There are only ten students in our classroom. Treville is a very small school.
Anyway, we kept discussing whether or not Maude will still have her brown hair, or if Trey is going to be with us again. When I talked about Trey, Natalie blushed. She'd always liked Trey, but I could care less about him. Natalie and I had been together in the same class every year since we were in kindergarten, and I hoped it would stay that way.
We entered the building and noticed that Principal Costello was sitting at the front desk in the office. He was sorting through some important papers, and he saw us and said, "Hello! Welcome back to TES!" We both looked at each other. Principal Costello was acting quite strange.
As we walked into Mr. Bryer's classroom, I saw my little sister, Sabrina, walking towards Mrs. Bosney's class. Sabrina is in first grade now, but she's not old enough to walk to school yet. She has to ride the school bus. I said, "Hey, sis! You like first grade so far?" She grinned and replied, "Yeah. I'm so happy to be with Brenda and Stover!" I smiled and got to class just before the bell rang.
Mr. Bryer stood in front of the class and said, "Welcome to fifth grade, everyone! Today we will be arranging the desks in alphabetical order, and then we'll play a 'Get-To-Know-You' game in alphabetical order." Mr. Bryer certainly liked alphabetical order.
"First, we will order the desks into two rows of five desks each," said Mr. Bryer. "Then, I will show every one of you where your permanent seats will be in this classroom," he added. He pointed at the first desk on the first row and said, "Steven Allen." Then, he pointed at the next seat behind him and said, "Jodi Beat." After that, it was Natalie Fenwood, Daisy Golding, and Trey Jing. On the next row, it was Veronica Mayfield, me, Maude Pike, Skyler Watson, and Tyler Watson. Once we finished getting seated in the correct seats, we got started.
Chapter 2.
"All right!" said Mr. Bryer. "Looks like we're ready to play the 'Get-To-Know-You' game! To play this game, you just go to the front of the room, say your name, and say something interesting about yourself. First up, we'll have Steven Allen."
Steven walked up to the front of the room. I smiled at him. He looked back at me and smiled, and I could see right into his eyes. They were blue, like mine. Steven said, "My name is Steven Allen, but you can call me Steve. My dad's name is Steven, too. That's where my name comes from. I have a little brother named Stover, which is my mom's maiden name. But everyone calls him Clover because of his obsession with plants." I giggled at the last thing he said. He smiled again at me, and then he went to go sit down.
We all seemed to know who would go next since it was in alphabetical order. Jodi Beat was going up to the front, and we knew it was her turn. Mr. Bryer didn't even need to tell us. Jodi said, "My name is Jodi Beat, and I love music. I have a dog named Rock N. Roll, but I just call him Rock. He's the best!" She went back to her seat.
It was now Natalie's turn. I was excited to see her at the front of the room. She said, "My name is Natalie Fenwood, and I have a best friend down there in the crowd. Her name is Jessica McKellen, and she'll introduce herself later!" Natalie grinned, and as she walked back to her seat, she high-fived me.
Daisy Golding was next. She somehow made it to the front and said, "My name is Daisy Golding, and I love everything from flowers to puppies to sweet little butterflies." She was very shy, and she quietly (very quietly) tiptoed back to her seat.
Now guess who was staring at the speaker? Natalie! The only reason why was that Trey Jing was next, and she's crazy over him. Once he got to the front, he said, "My name is Trey Jing, and it rhymes with Beijing. I was born there, and my grandparents live there." He looked at Natalie and smiled. I think he knew what she was thinking. In some way, he could read minds. He walked back to his seat, still smiling.
Next, it was the absolute worst girl in the entire grade's turn. Veronica Mayfield was going next. She strolled to the front of the classroom, wearing her mom's high heels and her fanciest, nicest clothes. She said, "My name is Veronica Mayfield. I love everything about the hottest new looks, and if you tell me something about them, it doesn't matter. I'm still Veronica Mayfield, the worst best girl at TES." She strolled back to her seat with the most evil little smirk on her face. This was going to be a long school year.
Chapter 3.
Next, it was my turn. I was a little nervous. I walked to the front of the classroom, swallowed, and said, "My name is Jessica McKellen, and I have a little sister named Sabrina. You can call me Jessie if you want, I don't mind. My best friend is Natalie Fenwood." I nervously went back to my seat.
Now, it was Odd Maude's turn. Everyone had called her Odd Maude since the day she came, in third grade. She walked to the front of the room and said, "My name is Maude Pike. I used to have brown hair, but I dyed it purple. That's all I can think of to say." She slowly walked back to her seat. It was boring to watch her walk.
After Odd Maude, Skyler went. She preparedly stepped to the front and said, "My name is Skyler Watson, and I have a twin brother named Tyler. He is right over there." She pointed at the desk right behind her chair, and, sure enough, there he was. Then, she went back to her seat.
Last, but not least, it was Tyler's turn. He stood at the front of the room and said, "My name is Tyler Watson, and like Skyler previously mentioned, I am her twin brother. She sits directly in front of me in this tremendous learning facility. I am extremely joyous to be with all of you this year, and I hope you are also." He confidently (and intelligently) walked back to his seat. He was surely a nerd.
"Looks like we're done!" said Mr. Bryer. "And just in time! The bell will ring soon. It's a good thing we had lunch and break earlier. Pack up, everyone!" He seemed to yell everything he said. Mr. Bryer was very loud when he talked. To get home in time, I packed up quickly.
The bell rang.
Chapter 4.
As I was walking home from school with my friends, Sabrina was getting on the bus. She was with Brenda and Stover, and they were all talking to each other. They saw Mrs. Cager, the bus driver, and her huge dog cage that sat on the seat right beside her. Its purpose was to lock the bad kids up inside it. If you got locked in that cage, you would stay in there for the whole ride. It would not be a pleasant day for you.
Anyway, Sabrina said, "So, Stover. I didn't know you had a nickname. Do you want us to call you Clover or Stover from now on?" Stover replied, "Either one is fine with me. If you like Stover, call me Stover. If you like Clover, call me Clover. Whichever one you like is all right."
Brenda chimed in and said, "I like Stover better. It's more correct, and it's your real name. It isn't about your plant obsession, either." Brenda was being a little mean, but since she mentioned his plant obsession, Stover blushed. "I guess it's sort of funny that I love plants so much," he said.
Sabrina said, "I don't think it's funny. I think it's great! I love plants, too! Whatever you like, we like. Right, Brenda?"
"Right," said Brenda. "It's cool," she added. I knew she didn't mean it, though.
Brenda didn't seem as enthusiastic about Stover's plant obsession (or Stover himself) as Sabrina was, but she didn't care. Sabrina was calling him Clover, no matter what anyone else said.
Did Stover (or Clover) even notice? Brenda was already off the bus.
Sabrina was going to find out.
This was her stop.
