Context: A competition where many people fight for the right to be trained by Madam Sureigh so they can slay a powerful dragon. Slaying said dragon gives the warrior a single wish.
“When the sun rises over that mountain,” the man gestured to the largest of a group of mountains to the east of the city. “The match will end and the both of you will be withdrawn from the event, victory is awarded by surrender or death.” Gripping my sword tightly, I approach Royn carefully. He was pacing, entering and leaving the dim torchlight. “Proceed.” Royn lunged, thrusting his sword level with his chest. I sidestepped his lunge and maneuvered away, gaining a few steps between us. Royn lunged a few more times, I repeated my actions keeping a distance from him.
“Stay still,” he shouted, stepping into a wide left swing. I deflected it but i'm knocked off balance by the impact. Royn advanced, recovering from his swing, and swinging wildly. I blocked two strikes and planted my foot squarely in his chest, the hit knocks him back. I caught his wrist and sliced open his forearm. He dropped his sword and clutched his wrist, stumbling backward.
“Give up,” I said, noticing the hint of orange growing over the mountains. “You’ll bleed out,” Royn reached for the sword. “Royn,” I warned. He took it into his left hand and lunged with a roar. I stepped back, Royn swung his right arm, blood splattered on my face as he winced. I knocked the sword out of his hand and smashed the hilt of my weapon into his chin. He staggered and fell onto his back, I approached, aiming my blade at his neck as he reached for his sword.
“Royn!” a girl screamed from the crowd. I looked up for a moment, “please! It’s not worth your life!” Royn kicked my knee and I stumbled as he retrieved his sword. He swung it in a quick, swipe. I parried it and slid my sword down against his cross guard. Royn grabbed my wrist and tried to force me to drop my sword. I twisted free, knocked his sword aside and sliced across his other wrist. He cried out and collapsed onto his knees. The sun was starting to rise, “Royn surrender!” the girl from before shouted. Royn locked eyes with me, he wasn’t going to surrender. I readied my blade and stepped on his as I approached. “Royn please!” I was standing over him, I raised my sword above my head. I take a breath, just like with the deer,
“I surrender,” Royn said. I lowered my sword.
